Bamburi Cement Wins Three Awards for Road Safety Efforts

Bamburi Cement has received three awards for its work in improving road safety, recognizing efforts ranging from driver welfare to technology and transport management.

The cement manufacturer won the honours at the Kenya Road Safety Excellence Awards 2026, organized by the Automobile Association of Kenya (AA Kenya) in partnership with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). The ceremony took place at Serena Hotel in Nairobi.

How Bamburi Cement Is Making Roads Safer

Bamburi Cement emerged as the winner in the Driver Safety and Wellness Award category. Its safety measures include a Digital Driver Pass, in-vehicle monitoring systems, a ban on night driving and audited defensive driving training.

Together, these measures are designed to improve driver accountability, promote safer driving habits and strengthen oversight of transport operations.

The company also won the Road Safety Champion Award for its transport safety management programme. The initiative covers more than 1,000 drivers and over 25 transport partners, extending safety standards beyond Bamburi Cement’s directly owned fleet.

By working with its transport partners, the company aims to promote consistent safety practices and reduce road incidents across its transport network.

Technology Takes Centre Stage

Bamburi Cement also secured first place in the Road Safety Innovation Award category for its Transporter Safety Maturity Audit Tool.

The tool uses a weighted scoring system to assess transporters across five road safety pillars. Unlike a simple pass-or-fail checklist, it categorizes transporters according to their level of safety maturity.

So far, 16 transporters have been assessed using the tool. It has also been applied to rail operators, extending its use beyond road transport.

The approach allows the company to identify safety gaps and assess transport partners more comprehensively.

Why the Recognition Matters

Bamburi Cement Supply Chain Director Mohamed Kassim said the awards reflected the efforts of employees and transport partners in protecting drivers and other road users.

He emphasized that road safety requires shared responsibility and continued investment in safer practices.

The three awards highlight the role that driver training, monitoring systems, welfare measures and data-driven assessments can play in improving transport safety.

For a company that relies on the movement of goods, maintaining safer journeys is important not only for its operations but also for the drivers, transport partners and communities that share Kenya’s roads.
