During one of the interviews after being appointed as the head coach, Benni McCarthy expressed great optimism about his new role, describing Kenya as a sleeping giant in African football that only needed the right push to awaken its potential.
“I think it’s a sleeping Giant (Harambee Stars), I looked at the project and it’s a country that has lots of potential with some good talented young players playing for Europe,” said the Harambee Stars coach, emphasizing his belief that with proper structure, discipline, and support, Kenya could rise to compete among the continent’s footballing powerhouses.
Coach McCarthy has brought in a winning mentality back to the team how so? Coach Benni once played in Europe, achieving great success all the way to winning the UEFA Champions League with FC Porto under the leadership of Coach Jose Mourinho.
His rich playing career across top European clubs exposed him to world-class football standards, tactical intelligence, and mental toughness. As a coach, Benni had the chance of being an assistant team coach at Manchester United, coaching big players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, and others.
All those experiences are now brought to Harambee Stars the winning mentality, the passion, the discipline, and the belief that Kenya can stand tall among Africa’s best. Two years into Hussein Mohamed’s tenure, the Football Kenya Federation has shown notable improvement in the administration of football in the country.
The Harambee Stars’ international friendlies and competitions have helped the team gain experience and confidence. Playing competitive matches against elite African teams has helped players adjust to high-pressure circumstances and develop their tactical understanding.
Hosting the CHAN tournament was a landmark occasion that demonstrated Kenya’s willingness to compete among Africa’s best football nations.
The country displayed great organizational competence and devotion by upgrading stadiums like as Nyayo and Kasarani to international levels, as well as enhancing transportation, accommodations, and training facilities.
