Sprite and Safaricom Celebrate Kenya’s Rising Creator Generation

Sprite and Safaricom Celebrate Kenya’s Rising Creator Generation

Sprite and Safaricom PLC have celebrated Kenya’s next generation of digital creators following the successful conclusion of the Hook’d on Fresh UGC Challenge, a youth-driven campaign that transformed campus culture, music, basketball, fashion and storytelling into one of the country’s biggest creator movements.

The campaign, launched under Sprite’s “It’s That Fresh” platform, generated more than 22.6 million views nationwide and brought together over 1,300 verified creators from universities across Kenya.

A Campaign Powered by Youth Creativity

The initiative invited young Kenyans to create short-form videos on TikTok and Instagram showcasing their fresh take on everyday heated moments.

What began as a marketing campaign quickly evolved into a large-scale youth content movement fueled by campus experiences, creator masterclasses, basketball activations and digital storytelling.

By the end of the campaign, creators had generated more than 52,000 shares, over 55,000 saves and more than 2 million engagements across social media platforms.

The campaign also rewarded 123 winners with KES 1.5 million in creator rewards and over 600GB in Safaricom data bundles.

Speaking during the awards ceremony, Juliana Kituma said the campaign highlighted the creativity and influence of Kenya’s youth.

“It’s That Fresh was created to meet young Kenyans where they live, play, create and express themselves. These creators did more than participate in a challenge, they shaped the campaign with their own voices,” she said.

Safaricom Hook Expands Digital Opportunities

The campaign kicked off with a Valentine’s Day youth experience at the KICC COMESA Grounds, attracting more than 5,000 young people through music, entertainment and youth culture experiences.

It later expanded into campuses through the Hook’d on Fresh Masterclass Series powered by Safaricom Hook.

The programme featured Kenyan digital creators including Carrie Wahu, Tileh Pacbro, Charisma, Rono and Cluster KE, who mentored students on storytelling, audience growth, virality and digital monetisation.

Susan Muthoka said the campaign demonstrated how connectivity can unlock opportunities for young creators.

“For Safaricom, this campaign has been about showing that connectivity is not just access to data; it is access to opportunity. We have seen young Kenyans use their creativity and communities to tell stories that travel far beyond campus,” she said.

TikTok Dominates Campaign Reach

TikTok emerged as the campaign’s strongest platform, delivering 19 million views and 1.7 million engagements. Instagram added another 4 million views and more than 500,000 engagements.

One of the campaign’s standout creators was Evans Githinji, whose content generated more than 5.2 million video views.

“For me, Hook’d on Fresh was more than a challenge, it was a chance to show my creativity and see how far one idea could go,” said Githinji.

As the campaign closes, Sprite and Safaricom PLC say the initiative has left a lasting impact by helping creators grow their audiences, sharpen digital skills and gain visibility within Kenya’s rapidly expanding creator economy.

The campaign also reinforced the growing influence of young digital creators in shaping culture, conversations and online engagement across the country.

Budget and Revenue Bills Dominate Agenda as National Assembly Resumes Sittings

The National Assembly resumes its regular sittings today afternoon with MPs set to begin deliberations on key budget and legislative business that will shape Kenya’s fiscal and policy direction for the 2026/2027 financial year.

Top on the agenda is the consideration of the Annual Estimates for the National Government for the 2026/2027 Financial Year through the Report of the Budget and Appropriations Committee, paving the way for the Appropriation Bill, 2026 and the Finance Bill, 2026.

Revenue Sharing and Devolution Framework
The House will also prioritise Senate amendments to the Division of Revenue Bill, 2026 and the County Allocation of Revenue Bill, 2026, which will determine the sharing of revenue between national and county governments.

Lawmakers are expected to process several priority Bills, including the Finance Bill, 2026, which proposes amendments to tax laws such as the Income Tax Act, Value Added Tax Act, Excise Duty Act and the Tax Procedures Act.

Also lined up is the Central Bank of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which seeks parliamentary approval of Central Bank Deputy Governors, alongside the Microfinance Bill, 2026 aimed at overhauling the regulatory framework for microfinance institutions.

Health Sector Reforms
In the health sector, MPs will continue reviewing the Quality Healthcare and Patient Safety Bill, 2025, which seeks to strengthen healthcare standards, accreditation systems and patient rights protections.

The House will also consider agreements and sessional papers covering agriculture, energy, petroleum policy and regional cooperation, alongside a nominee for Kenya’s High Commissioner to Ottawa, Canada, and proposals on degazettement of sections of public forests.

Sessions resume after the long recess during which committees conducted oversight and reviewed ministerial budget estimates for the 2026/2027 financial year.

With the budget cycle now entering a decisive stage, MPs are expected to balance competing fiscal priorities, including revenue mobilisation, devolution financing, and sectoral allocations across health, education, infrastructure and security.

The deliberations are also likely to draw public attention given the sensitivity of the Finance Bill, 2026.

FKF Leadership Suspension Rejected by FIFA

FIFA has categorically rejected the suspension of Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohamed, acting Secretary General/CEO Dennis Gicheru, and a member of the National Executive Committee, citing failure to comply with the FKF Constitution.

It follows correspondence exchanged between FIFA and FKF National Executive Committee members regarding the provisional stepping aside of the officials, which FIFA says did not meet required procedural standards.

Article 41 of the FKF Constitution Cited

“Article 41 of the 2017 FKF Constitution clearly regulates the process for the provincial dismissal or provisional suspension of a person od a body of FKF,” the statement read.

FIFA noted that any forced ‘step aside’ measures are legally equivalent to provisional suspension and must fully comply with constitutional safeguards, which are mandatory and not optional.

On this basis FIFA stated it cannot recognize decisions taken outside the FKF constitutional framework and emphasized that such actions have no legal effect within the federation.

Call for Restraint and Governance Discipline
FIFA further urged FKF officials to exercise restraint and adhere strictly to governance procedures, warning that Kenya has previously experienced institutional instability when constitutional rules are ignored.

Additionally, FIFA warned that individuals involved in breaches of FKF regulations may face disciplinary consequences under the federation’s judicial structures, which are empowered to act.

FIFA reiterated that compliance with constitutional procedures is essential for safeguarding institutional integrity, particularly in decisions affecting senior leadership and the administration of national football governance.

It added that such decisions must never be rushed and should always follow due process to prevent recurrence of governance disputes that have previously disrupted FKF operations.

FIFA stressed that Article 41 safeguards are fundamental guarantees of legality and cannot be bypassed through informal or alternative administrative arrangements, regardless of urgency or internal disagreements within FKF governance structures.

Africa Feature Network Launches 1,000KM Charity Run

Africa Feature Network Launches 1,000KM Charity Run

There are campaigns that raise awareness, and then there are movements that invite people to become part of something bigger than themselves. That is exactly what the Africa Feature Network hopes to achieve through its newly launched “Miles for Meals and Dignity” 1,000-kilometre charity run.

Set to take place from September 14 to October 10, 2026, the endurance challenge will stretch from the coastal town of Kilifi all the way to Busia at the Kenya-Uganda border. But beyond the kilometres lies a deeper mission fighting child hunger in schools and restoring dignity to girls facing period poverty.

The initiative will be led by Peter Aowa alongside athletes, youth groups, fitness communities, corporates, institutions, and everyday Kenyans who will join different sections of the route through organised community runs.

A Run With a Bigger Purpose

At its core, the campaign seeks to raise KES 13 million to support two impactful programmes. The first is a School Feeding Programme targeting 1,000 learners across six primary schools in three counties for one academic year. The second is the Pad a Girl Initiative, which aims to support 5,000 school-going girls with sanitary towels and menstrual health assistance.

For many children across Kenya, learning on an empty stomach remains a daily reality. For thousands of girls, missing school because of unaffordable sanitary products continues to affect confidence, dignity, and academic progress.

The Africa Feature Network says the campaign is about moving beyond conversations and creating practical, community-driven solutions.

“As The Africa Feature Network, we strongly believe journalism should not end at highlighting problems alone. Media and advocacy platforms also have a responsibility to help drive conversations around practical responses, community participation, and sustainable solutions,” the organisation noted during the launch.

Mobilizing Communities Across Kenya

The run will feature different participation categories including 5KM, 10KM, 15KM, and 20KM community runs across key towns such as Mombasa, Nairobi, Nakuru, and Eldoret. These stops will host awareness campaigns, public engagements, and media activations aimed at rallying more Kenyans around the cause.

Registration for schools, corporates, universities, fitness clubs, organisations, and individuals officially opens on May 29, 2026.

What makes the initiative stand out is its sustainability model. Participating schools will establish School Green Labs to support local food production, while nearby farmers and women groups will become part of the supply chain supporting the feeding programme.

Building Partnerships for Long-Term Impact

The campaign also marks the beginning of a broader partnership drive, with the organisation inviting corporates, financial institutions, county governments, media houses, development organisations, and members of the public to support the initiative through sponsorships, collaborations, and in-kind support.

More than just a run, “Miles for Meals and Dignity” is shaping up to become a national movement rooted in compassion, community, and the belief that every child deserves both nourishment and dignity.

NCIC Warns Against Rising Hate Speech, Political Intolerance

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has announced that it is now fully constituted following the swearing-in of its Chairperson and seven Commissioners, signaling renewed institutional readiness to address rising cases of political intolerance, hate speech, ethnic contempt, and violent rhetoric in the country.

The Commission says it assumes office at a critical moment marked by escalating inflammatory political discourse, coordinated online attacks, and disruptions of public gatherings that threaten national cohesion and democratic stability.

Pattern of Political Disruptions and Inflammatory Conduct
NCIC notes a troubling pattern of deliberate disruptions of political meetings, inflammatory statements by political leaders and supporters, ethnic profiling, and systematic demonisation of dissenting views.

NCIC warns these developments are not isolated incidents but potential violations of law that undermine peaceful coexistence.

It emphasizes that democracy is sustained through tolerance, peaceful engagement, adherence to constitutional principles, and respect for divergent opinions, cautioning that any system that weaponises ethnicity or intimidates opponents risks destabilising the nation.

The Commission further underscores that while Article 33 of the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, it does not extend to hate speech, incitement to violence, or ethnic hatred.

It points to Article 10, which enshrines national unity, human dignity, and social justice as binding values, and notes that the National Cohesion and Integration Act criminalises ethnic contempt and related offences.

NCIC stresses that these legal provisions are not optional ideals but enforceable obligations binding on all citizens without exception.

Monitoring of Digital and Physical Spaces
The Commission warns it is actively monitoring both offline and digital spaces, including social media platforms, public rallies, and political proceedings.

It states online hate speech carries the same legal consequences as physical utterances and that anonymity will not shield perpetrators from accountability.

NCIC affirms it will not be deterred by political influence or status, and that any individual found culpable will face the full range of legal and remedial measures, including prosecution where evidence is available.

NCIC calls on political parties to enforce internal discipline and ensure members adhere to constitutional standards, noting that parties bear responsibility for supporter conduct.

It urges leaders to model restraint, denounce hate speech, and reject silence in the face of intolerance. It further appeals to citizens, especially youth, to reject manipulation and embrace peaceful, issue-based political engagement. It stresses that Kenya’s diversity is a strength requiring mutual respect and lawful channels for resolving grievances.

The Commission reiterates that protecting peace and national cohesion is a collective responsibility and urges Kenyans to reject hate, violence, and ethnic division. It affirms readiness to engage stakeholders in building a peaceful, unified nation.

Cooking With Beer: Why Draught Deserves A Place In The Kitchen

Draught beer is best known as a cold, refreshing drink shared over conversation and good food. But beyond the glass, it is also quietly becoming a versatile ingredient in modern kitchens.

From marinades and sauces to glazes and batters, chefs are increasingly using draught beer to add depth, balance and subtle complexity to everyday meals.

From Curiosity To The Kitchen
For Chef Stephanie Mwende, cooking with beer is less about novelty and more about flavour-building.

Her approach to cooking has been shaped by years of working across different kitchens and experimenting with ingredients that elevate dishes without making them overly complicated.

She focuses on combining familiar ingredients with bold flavours that remain approachable.

“I like using everyday ingredients and adding some excitement without overcomplicating it,” she says.

It was this mindset that first led her to experiment with draught beer in cooking. What started as a conversation with a mentor quickly evolved into a deeper appreciation for how beer can transform food.

Building Depth Through Beer
According to Chef Stephanie, beer naturally combines several flavour elements in one ingredient.
It carries subtle bitterness, light sweetness and richness, making it effective for building flavour quickly while still keeping dishes balanced.

“It adds depth without trying too hard,” she explains. “You’re layering flavour naturally and helping the dish stay cohesive.”

This makes beer particularly useful in marinades, sauces and glazes, where it can enhance richness without overpowering the main ingredients.

Chef Stephanie notes that draught beer works especially well in cooking because of its cleaner and fresher profile compared to heavier alternatives.

“It’s fresher and lighter,” she says. “It blends into the food instead of taking over.”

Different draught beers can also shape the final flavour of a dish. A lighter profile such as White Cap works well for delicate meals where balance is important, while a bolder beer like Tusker adds more depth to rich dishes such as grilled meats and hearty stews.

Simple Ways To Cook With Beer
Despite the growing interest in beer-infused cooking, Chef Stephanie insists the process itself is simple.

She encourages home cooks to start small and experiment gradually.

“Use it in marinades, add it to frying batters, or use it as a base for sauces,” she advises.

“Even deglazing a pan with beer instead of stock can completely change the flavour of a dish.”

Beer pairs naturally with grilled meats, fried foods, potatoes and rich sauces. It also complements cheese-based dishes, especially dips and creamy sauces where the flavour can stand out more distinctly.

On the lighter side, it can help balance spicy dishes and add subtle complexity to seafood without making meals feel heavy.

Try It Yourself: Draught-Glazed Chicken Wings
If you’re looking for an easy place to start, this is one of Chef Stephanie’s go-to recipes:
Ingredients
• 500g chicken wings
• 1 cup draught beer
• 3 tablespoons honey
• 1 tablespoon light soy sauce or tamari
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• Salt and pepper to taste

More Than Just A Drink
One of Chef Stephanie’s favourite recipes is draught-glazed chicken wings, where beer is simmered with honey, garlic and soy sauce to create a sticky glaze that coats crispy wings.

As more chefs experiment with unconventional ingredients, draught beer is proving it can be more than just a drink. In the kitchen, it offers a simple way to create meals that feel richer, more layered and ultimately more memorable.

Visa Report Warns of Rising AI-Powered Payment Scams

Visa Report Warns of Rising AI-Powered Payment Scams

Visa has released its mid-year 2026 Biannual Threats Report, revealing that scammers are increasingly using artificial intelligence and social engineering to manipulate consumers into authorizing payments themselves.

The report highlights a major shift in the global fraud landscape. While payment security systems continue to strengthen, criminals are now focusing more on exploiting human trust rather than breaching technology systems.

According to Visa, scams became the fastest-growing source of consumer harm between July and December 2025, with nearly $1 billion in scam-related activity identified during the period.

Criminals Shift from Technology to Human Manipulation

Unlike traditional payment fraud, many of today’s scams do not require hacking systems or stealing card information.

Instead, fraudsters impersonate trusted brands, financial institutions, and service providers. They create urgency and pressure victims into completing legitimate-looking transactions.

Paul Fabara said the changing fraud landscape requires stronger collaboration across the payments ecosystem.

“Payments at a network level continue to get safer, but threats are evolving faster than ever,” he said.

He added that criminals are increasingly targeting people through deception, urgency, and AI-enabled tools designed to exploit trust.

Visa Report Warns of Rising AI-Powered Payment Scams
Visa Report Warns of Rising AI-Powered Payment Scams
Four Major Threat Trends Identified

The report outlines four key trends shaping global payment security.

First, Visa noted that stronger authentication systems and network protections are working. Fraud involving device tokens declined by 9.6 percent compared to the same period in 2024.

However, scammers are rapidly shifting toward social engineering attacks.

Secondly, scams are now the dominant consumer payment threat globally as criminals prioritize manipulation over technical breaches.

The report also found that artificial intelligence is transforming fraud on both sides. Fraudsters now use AI to create more convincing scams at scale, while payment companies increasingly rely on AI-powered defenses to detect suspicious activity earlier.

Additionally, global ransomware activity increased by 26 percent during the second half of 2025.

Despite the rise in attacks, only 23 percent of victims paid ransoms, marking the lowest payment rate recorded so far.

AI Lowers the Barrier for Fraud

Michael Jabbara warned that AI is making fraud easier to execute.

“The rapid adoption of AI has fundamentally lowered the barrier to entry for fraud,” he said.

He noted that attacks that previously required advanced technical expertise can now be carried out using simple AI prompts.

Consequently, Visa says intelligence-driven defenses and coordinated action across banks, merchants, policymakers, and technology players will become increasingly important in protecting consumers.

Ultimately, the report shows that as payment systems become more secure, fraudsters are adapting quickly by targeting the human side of digital payments.

CS Mbadi: Let Us Not Politicise the Finance Bill 2026

Treasury CS John Mbadi has dismissed claims that the Finance Bill 2026 contains punitive or hidden tax measures, saying he could not identify the provisions being criticised despite personally drafting and submitting the proposal.

Speaking in Nairobi, Mbadi said he reviewed the bill after concerns were raised publicly and found no provisions that could be described as punitive, arguing that the debate had been distorted.

No Evidence of Punitive Tax Measures, Says Treasury CS
He questioned the narrative that the Bill introduces new taxation on land, including leasehold or freehold property, insisting that such clauses do not exist in the document currently before Parliament.

Mbadi singled out opposition leader and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka for what he termed misleading public statements, challenging him to point to specific clauses supporting his assertions.

“I have the bill with me and it is very clear. There is nowhere in it that speaks about taxing land, whether leasehold or freehold,” Mbadi said, calling for factual debate on the Finance Bill 2026.

He warned against politicization of fiscal policy, saying leaders should focus on identifying real gaps in revenue proposals rather than spreading what he described as propaganda.

Mbadi added that responsible leadership requires honesty in public discourse, especially when dealing with sensitive national revenue legislation that directly affects economic planning.

He said his interest in addressing the matter was triggered by public commentary on so called punitive tax measures, which he claims are not reflected in the draft Finance Bill 2026 he submitted to the National Assembly.

Parliament Urged to Focus on Facts in Budget Process
CS Mbadi maintained that Kenya must avoid politicising the budget making process, stressing that disagreements should be based on identifiable clauses and not general political rhetoric.

He further argued that misinformation about tax policy risks undermining public trust in fiscal reforms, especially at a time when government is seeking to broaden revenue collection and stabilise economic planning.

Mbadi reiterated that the Finance Bill 2026 remains under parliamentary consideration and urged lawmakers and the public to engage with its contents based on evidence rather than assumptions.
