Chamaa: The New Kenyan Drama Where Friendship, Money and Secrets Collide
What happens when a simple chama turns into a multimillion-shilling Sacco and suddenly, everyone has something to lose?
That is the question at the heart of Chamaa, a new Kenyan drama series set to premiere on Maisha Magic Plus.
Produced by Phil It Productions, the series takes viewers into the fictional Gakoe Estate in Ruiru, where five women find themselves caught between friendship, ambition, money and the pressure to maintain appearances.
Chamaa premiered on 5 October, with new episodes airing every Monday at 8pm on DStv Channel 163 and GOtv Channel 503.
From a Simple Chama to High-Stakes Trouble
Lydia, Njambi, Halima, Cyndy and Phoebe have built their lives around a familiar Kenyan institution the merry-go-round chama.
But when newcomer Phoebe suggests turning their savings circle into a Sacco, the women see an opportunity to change their fortunes and escape debt.
Things take an unexpected turn when a powerful political fixer approaches them with a tempting real estate deal.
As the Sacco grows, so do the risks.
Then the money disappears.
A mysterious death follows.
Suddenly, the five friends are faced with a much bigger question: Will they protect each other, or themselves?
A Story About the Lives We Show , And Hide
Beyond the drama, Chamaa taps into issues that feel very familiar in modern Kenya.
The series explores chama culture, financial independence, corruption, the so-called “wash-wash” economy and the pressure to look successful, particularly in the age of social media.
Its characters also represent different sides of everyday Kenyan life from the chef and pastor to the influencer and socialite.
“Chamaa is a story about the masks we wear and what it costs to keep them on,” said Philip Karanja, Director and Producer of the series.
He says the show uses the familiar idea of a chama to explore how friendship and ambition can change when money enters the picture.

A Cast of Familiar Faces
The drama brings together Joyce Musoke as Lydia, Gathoni Njuguna as Njambi, Melissa Lesilale as Halima, Makena Kahuha as Cyndy, Shirlene Wangari as Phoebe and Wakio Mzenge as Mrs Omollo.
For MultiChoice Kenya, Chamaa is part of its continued push for local productions that reflect Kenyan experiences.
“Chamaa is exactly the kind of storytelling we want to keep bringing to our audiences,” said Nzola Miranda, CEO of MultiChoice Kenya.
And with friendships tested, money disappearing and secrets waiting to come out, Chamaa looks set to bring plenty of drama to Kenyan screens.
Catch Chamaa every Monday at 8pm on Maisha Magic Plus, DStv Channel 163 and GOtv Channel 503.
