The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the death of advocate Esther Wairimu Keige, describing the incident as a stark reminder of the country’s persistent femicide crisis.
Keige’s Death Raises Fresh Concerns
In a statement released on Tuesday, FIDA-Kenya confirmed the death of Keige, who served as the Legal Affairs Manager at the Kenya Forest Service (KFS). According to reports cited by the organisation, her body was discovered on a farm in Juja, nearly a month after she was reported missing on June 10, 2026.
The organisation said Keige’s disappearance and tragic death should not be viewed as an isolated incident but as part of a wider pattern of violence against women in Kenya.
FIDA-Kenya noted that the case reflects the reality of an unrelenting femicide crisis in which women continue to be targeted and stripped of their fundamental right to life.
Calls for Transparent Investigation
The women’s rights organisation urged the National Police Service (NPS) to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Keige’s disappearance and death.
It also called on investigators to urgently identify and apprehend those responsible, emphasizing that any individuals or entities found culpable must be held accountable under the law.
“FIDA-Kenya demands a thorough and transparent investigation by the National Police Service (NPS) into the exact circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death,” the organisation said.
“The police must urgently investigate and unmask those behind her abduction and death, and ensure they face justice. Any individuals or entities found culpable must be held accountable according to the law.”
The federation further extended its condolences to Keige’s family, friends, colleagues and all those who knew her, saying it stands in solidarity with them as they mourn the loss.
“We wish to send our condolences to her loved ones and all those who knew her and stand in solidarity with them as they cope with this loss,” the statement read.
The organisation, which has championed women’s rights in Kenya for more than four decades, reiterated its commitment to promoting equality, justice and the protection of women from violence.
