Angella Okutoyi has officially turned professional, marking a new chapter in her career as she relocates to London to pursue tennis full-time.
The Kenyan star says the decision is one driven by ambition and a willingness to embrace uncertainty, describing the opportunity as one she could not afford to let pass.
“I am excited to make this big step. I feel like you wouldn’t know if you don’t try,” she said.
Okutoyi acknowledged that many aspiring athletes dream of getting the chance to compete at the highest level, adding that she is grateful to be in a position where she can test herself against the world’s best.
“I am just happy that I get that chance and I am going to try and do my best. Whatever happens, happens, but at least in the back of my head I have tried,” she added.
College Experience Shapes Professional Mindset
The transition to the professional circuit follows years of development in college tennis, where Okutoyi says she learned resilience, discipline, and the importance of a strong support system.
She noted that competing at the collegiate level taught her how to fight through difficult moments on court while relying on teammates and coaches for encouragement and guidance.
“The lessons I have gained and experiences are just fighting on the court and, even when things get tough, knowing you have people around you supporting you,” she said.
Okutoyi credited her teammates and coaches for playing a significant role in her growth, saying they inspired her both on and off the court.
Ready for the Challenges of Professional Tennis
While acknowledging that professional tennis is a far more individual journey than college competition, Okutoyi believes the foundation she has built will serve her well.
Unlike collegiate tennis, where teammates are constantly present, the professional tour demands greater self-reliance. Even so, she remains confident that the people around her will continue to play an important role in her development.
“I know it’s going to be different because it is an individual sport. It is not like college where you have your teammates around you, but still it’s going to help me and I have a good team around me,” she said.
As she begins life in London and embarks on the next phase of her career, Okutoyi says her focus remains on continuous improvement, trusting her support team, and making the most of an opportunity she has worked hard to earn.
