Kenya’s tourism sector recorded significant growth over the past year, with higher visitor arrivals, record earnings, expanded air connectivity, and stronger international partnerships highlighting the Ministry of Tourism’s achievements during its first year in office.

The sector welcomed 2.4 million international visitors in 2024, up from 2.09 million in 2023, representing a 15 percent increase. Tourism earnings also reached a record KSh452.2 billion, reflecting a 20 percent growth and reinforcing the industry’s role as one of Kenya’s leading foreign exchange earners.

The gains come amid renewed efforts by the Ministry to position Kenya as a competitive global tourism destination while expanding opportunities for investment, employment, and community development.

International Recognition and Improved Connectivity

During the year, Kenya strengthened its influence on the global tourism stage by securing a seat on the UN Tourism Executive Council for the 2025–2029 term. The appointment positions both Kenya and Africa to play a greater role in shaping international tourism policies and strategies.

The Ministry also worked with the Department of Immigration to introduce the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, simplifying entry procedures and making travel to Kenya faster and more convenient for international visitors.

Kenya further expanded its global connectivity through the introduction of new direct international flights. Airlines including AirAsia launched the Kuala Lumpur–Nairobi route, while Brussels Airlines and Air China also introduced new services, increasing accessibility from key source markets.

Raising Standards Across the Sector

To improve visitor experience, the Ministry conducted a nationwide accreditation exercise covering 1,614 accommodation and catering establishments. The initiative sought to enhance service quality and strengthen Kenya’s reputation as a world-class tourism destination.

The Ministry also invested in workforce development through the launch of the Tourism Training Revolving Fund in partnership with the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB). The programme has already supported more than 2,000 hospitality students pursuing careers in the tourism industry.

Promoting New Destinations

As part of efforts to diversify tourism products, the Ministry launched the Magical Kenya Mountain and Trail Series. The initiative showcases Kenya’s scenic highlands, hiking trails, and lesser-known destinations within established tourism circuits.

The programme aims to encourage domestic and international travellers to explore new experiences beyond traditional safari and beach tourism.

Stronger Partnerships Drive Growth

The Ministry deepened collaboration with private sector stakeholders, including the Kenya Association of Travel Agents (KATA), the Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers (KAHC), and the Kenya Tourism Federation (KTF).

It also strengthened partnerships with county governments, including Kilifi, Murang’a, Embu, Mombasa, and Nyandarua, to promote destination development and improve tourism competitiveness across the country.

Kenya also hosted several high-level international delegations, including European Union ambassadors, resulting in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at enhancing tourism promotion, investment, and marketing partnerships.

Supporting Youth and Long-Term Growth

The Ministry continued investing in youth participation through tourism innovation programmes, hackathons, entrepreneurship initiatives, and skills development. Construction of the Youth Tourism Hub is nearing completion and is expected to provide a dedicated space for innovation, collaboration, and capacity building.

To guide future growth, the Ministry launched its Strategic Plan 2023–2027, outlining priorities for tourism and wildlife development, sustainability, innovation, and sector competitiveness.

In addition, the Ministry signed 2a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Interior to strengthen the Tourist Police Unit across the country. The partnership seeks to improve visitor safety and reinforce Kenya’s reputation as a secure destination for international travellers.

The milestones underscore the Ministry’s efforts to position tourism as a key driver of economic growth, employment creation, and sustainable development while enhancing Kenya’s competitiveness in the global tourism market.
