Addis Ababa Summit to Spotlight Africa’s Future in Diplomacy and Innovation
More than 600 policymakers, innovators, academics, and civil society leaders will gather in Addis Ababa later this month for the inaugural World Public Summit Africa, a high-level forum aimed at strengthening Africa’s voice in global affairs.
The summit, scheduled for July 29 and 30, will bring together participants from across Africa and beyond to explore new approaches to diplomacy, innovation, and sustainable development.
Hosted at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) under the theme New World: Africa in Shaping a Common Future, the event is organised by the World Peoples Assembly in partnership with the Global Black Centre and several international organizations.
Organizers say the summit will promote dialogue, cultural exchange, economic cooperation, and people-centred diplomacy at a time when Africa is seeking a greater role in global decision-making.
A New Approach to Global Engagement
As geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve, many African countries are looking beyond traditional state-to-state diplomacy to strengthen international partnerships.
Organizers believe governments, businesses, universities, civil society organizations, and cultural institutions all have a role to play in shaping the continent’s future.
“The summit reflects a new approach to international engagement that prioritizes people-to-people cooperation, mutual respect, and shared development goals,” organizers said.
The two-day programme will feature a high-level plenary session, five thematic discussion platforms, an international business forum, a 1,200-square-metre innovation exhibition, and an international awards ceremony.
More than 2,000 guests are also expected to attend a closing celebration at the historic ADWA Memorial Complex.
Five Themes Driving Africa’s Future
The summit will examine five key areas that organisers believe will define Africa’s development over the coming decades.
The first theme, Genuine Sovereignty, will focus on strengthening national resilience through investments in infrastructure, food security, and information systems.
Another session on Youth Leadership will explore education, employment, entrepreneurship, and leadership opportunities for Africa’s rapidly growing young population.
Technology will also take centre stage during discussions on Innovations for the Future, covering artificial intelligence, digital transformation, smart infrastructure, media innovation, and emerging technologies.
Delegates will also discuss Creativity and Cultural Diplomacy, examining how Africa’s cultural heritage can strengthen international cooperation and build stronger global relationships.
The final thematic platform will focus on scientific and educational collaboration, highlighting the importance of research partnerships and knowledge exchange in accelerating sustainable development.
Investment and Innovation in Focus
Alongside policy discussions, the summit will host an International Business Cooperation Platform designed to strengthen commercial partnerships between African and global investors.
Operating under the theme From Trust Between Peoples to Trust Between Economics, the forum will facilitate business-to-business and government-to-business engagements while showcasing investment opportunities across the continent.
Participants will also explore innovations in financial technology, cybersecurity, food technology, digital infrastructure, education, and smart transport through an innovation exhibition.
Beyond the Summit
Organisers say the gathering aims to deliver lasting outcomes rather than end with discussions alone.
Among the expected initiatives are the creation of an African Network of Public Diplomacy, a continent-wide community of public diplomacy leaders, and a World Peoples Assembly Business Club for Africa.
Delegates are also expected to adopt an African Communiqué, recommendations for the World Public Summit 2026, proposals to strengthen NGO cooperation, and plans for a dedicated public diplomacy media platform focused on African storytelling.
The Addis Ababa meeting will be the first of six regional summits planned for 2026 ahead of the flagship World Public Summit themed A New World: Values That Unite.
Additional regional forums are scheduled for India, the Arab world, Latin America, Europe, and Russia.
Organisers believe the Africa summit offers the continent an opportunity to shape global conversations while advancing a development agenda built on innovation, cultural exchange, sovereignty, and shared prosperity.
