Chapa Dimba Stars Find Their Moment at Kayole Starlets

There’s something powerful about seeing young dreams take shape. For three rising footballers, that moment has arrived at Kayole Starlets.

Goalkeeper Sonia Wambui, striker Calta Nasambu, and Naomi Nanjala have officially joined the club mid-season. The move marks a big step up from the National Super League into the Kenya Premier League.

Their journey, however, did not start here. The trio came through the Safaricom Chapa Dimba programme. Along the way, they gained exposure, confidence, and a platform to grow. They even travelled to Spain for a training bootcamp, an experience that helped sharpen their skills and mindset.

For Naomi, the move feels personal. She describes it as a dream come true after years of pushing through lower leagues. Meanwhile, Sonia sees it as proof that opportunities do exist for young players willing to put in the work.

What stands out is how Chapa Dimba continues to open doors. It is not just a tournament. Instead, it is a pathway. More young players are moving from grassroots football into professional leagues, both locally and abroad.

More Than Football, It’s a Journey

Across Kenya, stories like these are becoming more common. Through platforms supported by Safaricom, young athletes are finding structure, mentorship, and real opportunities.

Today, dozens of players from recent Chapa Dimba seasons now play in top leagues. Some have even gone international. As a result, the gap between grassroots football and professional careers continues to shrink.

At Kayole Starlets, the impact is already visible. The team is rebuilding, aiming higher, and investing in young talent. Currently sitting seventh, they are pushing for a top-three finish.

For the three new signings, this is just the beginning. They are stepping into a bigger stage, but they carry with them the same hunger that brought them here.

And perhaps that’s the beauty of it all. Sometimes, all it takes is one opportunity, one platform, and one belief to change everything.

The Silent Pregnancy Threat: Understanding the Dangers of Preeclampsia

The Silent Pregnancy Threat: Understanding the Dangers of Preeclampsia

Even while certain symptoms can initially appear minor, they may indicate major issues that need to be treated right once.

  1. Shortness of breathing

Shortness of breath can occur when extra fluid accumulates in the lungs as a result of elevated blood pressure caused by preeclampsia. This can make it difficult for a pregnant woman to breathe normally and may suggest that the illness is damaging her circulatory and organ systems.

  1. Dark spots form in your vision.

Seeing dark spots, flashes, or floaters may indicate that high blood pressure is disrupting blood flow to the eyes and brain. This symptom should not be overlooked because it may indicate worsening complications from preeclampsia.

  1. Headaches.

Women with preeclampsia frequently experience persistent or severe headaches due to high blood pressure, which can increase pressure in the brain.

  1. Blurred eyesight or light sensitivity.

High blood pressure affects the neurological system and blood vessels in the eyes, causing vision alterations such as blurred vision or sensitivity to bright light. These symptoms may suggest that the illness is becoming more serious.

  1. Pain on the upper right side of the abdomen

Preeclampsia-induced liver oedema or irritation may be the source of pain in the upper right abdomen. This discomfort might be intense or constant, and it is considered a serious warning indication.

  1. Swelling in the hands, ankles and face (edema)

Sudden swelling, particularly in the hands, face, and feet, occurs when the body stores excess fluid. While minor swelling is common during pregnancy, excessive or unexpected swelling may indicate preeclampsia and should be checked by a healthcare specialist.

The risk factors may include:

Family history of Preeclampsia

~ Maternal age under 20 or over 35

~ First Pregnancy

~ Chronic high blood pressure

~ Obesity

~ Diabetes

~ Autoimmune disorder

~ Kidney Disorder

The Silent Pregnancy Threat: Understanding the Dangers of Preeclampsia
The Silent Pregnancy Threat: Understanding the Dangers of Preeclampsia

Preeclampsia can cause major, possible fatal issues for both the mother and the unborn child if treatment is not provided.

Because doctors may need to deliver the baby early to protect the mother’s health, the condition may result in an early birth.

Long-term high blood pressure can also cause organ damage, especially to the liver, kidneys, and brain.

Placental abruption is a condition in which the placenta separates from the uterine wall prior to delivery, depriving the foetus of oxygen and nourishment. Eclampsia, a type of seizure, may develop if the condition gets worse. If urgent medical attention is not given, these complications greatly raise the mother’s and her unborn child’s risk of serious health issues and even death.

Early detection and good medical care during pregnancy are critical for preventing and controlling preeclampsia. Regular monitoring enables healthcare personnel to detect warning symptoms early and respond appropriately to protect both the mother and the baby. Key preventative and management measures include the following:

Regular prenatal examinations help healthcare providers to monitor the mother’s health, check blood pressure, and discover early signs of difficulties associated with preeclampsia.

Monitoring blood pressure: Regular blood pressure tests help in detecting abnormal increases early. Early detection allows doctors to treat the illness before it worsens into serious complications.

Healthy diet: Eating a balanced diet full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and enough protein promotes maternal health in general and may help lower some preeclampsia risk factors.

Medication if prescribed: In certain situations, medical professionals may recommend drugs to lower the risk of problems or regulate blood pressure. These drugs must always be administered under a doctor’s supervision.

Early delivery in severe cases: Doctors may advise delivering the baby before the anticipated due date as the safest course of action if the condition worsens and poses a risk to the mother’s or the child’s health.

Awareness and immediate action continue to be the most effective strategies against preeclampsia. Expectant moms can dramatically lower their risks of experiencing serious challenges by recognising warning signals, knowing personal risk factors, and attending frequent prenatal checks.

Early detection, good medical therapy, and a healthy lifestyle preserve not only the mother’s health, but also the baby’s life and well-being.

Experts emphasize the need of informed and proactive care; when women and healthcare providers collaborate, the silent hazards of preeclampsia can be effectively addressed, resulting in safer pregnancies and healthier outcomes for families.

How Peer Pressure Influences Teen Health Choices Growing Up

How Peer Pressure Influences Teen Health Choices Growing Up

From the start, parents strive to teach their children how to make healthy choices. However, as children grow older, their parents’ influence diminishes, and peer judgment becomes increasingly significant.

Social pressure can influence a variety of thoughts, actions, and behaviors, including academic performance, substance usage, and mental health.

What Is Peer Pressure?

Peer pressure occurs when people push others in their social group to do things they may not want to do. Peer pressure can affect both teens and adults, and they may engage in risky behavior to fit in.

Psychological and Social Aspects

Desire for Acceptance: Teenagers desire to be liked and accepted by their peers. This need can encourage people to participate in group activities, including harmful ones, in order to avoid feeling excluded or judged. Peer approval might feel rewarding, whereas rejection or taunting can be emotionally distressing, leading youth to conform.

Social Learning: Teens observe and emulate the actions of their peers, believing that the decisions made by popular or self-assured friends are secure or appealing. Decisions are heavily influenced by group norms, which prioritize conformity over individualism based on what the peer group finds acceptable.

Fear of Rejection: Adolescents may try alcohol, smoke, or violate the law out of fear of being shunned or ridiculed. At this age, social pressure frequently triumphs over reason since the drive to fit in may outweigh the potential consequences.

Factors Contributing to Peer Influence

Peer influence can be influenced by a variety of factors, including social media, family relationships, and school climate. These factors have a big impact on how people are influenced by their peers and how they behave and make decisions.

School Environment: Teens spend the most of their time in school and connect with their peers on a daily basis. Peer attitudes, actions, and social norms might foster conformity, increasing the likelihood of pupils engaging in risky behaviors in order to fit in or obtain approval.

Family Dynamics: A supportive family with open communication and instruction helps lessen vulnerability to negative peer pressure. In contrast, a lack of supervision, uneven regulations, or family strife might cause kids to seek affirmation from friends, hence boosting peer influence.

Social media: Online platforms increase peer impact by constantly exposing kids to their peers’ lifestyles, trends, and behaviors. Likes, comments, and follower counts put pressure on people to emulate others, which can lead to unhealthy behaviors such as drinking, smoking, or taking on dangerous challenges.

How Peer Pressure Influences Teen Health Choices Growing Up
Effects of Peer Pressure on Health

Short-term Effects

Accidents and injuries

Illness

Conflicts with peers

Long-term Effects

Addiction (drugs, alcohol, or other substances)

Mental health issues (anxiety, depression, low self-esteem)

Chronic health problems

Poor academic performance or school dropouts

It takes a combination of supportive surroundings, education, and advice to prevent the detrimental impacts of peer pressure on teenagers.

Parents, schools, and communities may support kids in making better decisions and fending off negative influences by providing them with information, resilience, and supportive social networks.

Peer Support: Encourage positive peer groups and role models who promote healthy habits. Having friends who practice safe behaviors creates a supportive environment, reducing the pressure to engage in harmful activities.

Education: Implement awareness programs in schools, neighborhoods, and on social media to educate teenagers about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and risky behavior. Teens can use knowledge to make educated decisions and recognize negative peer pressure.

Communication: Encourage open and honest communication among parents, teenagers, and mentors. Teens who feel acknowledged and encouraged at home are better able to resist negative peer influences.

Building Resilience: Teach people how to make decisions, think critically, and be confident in themselves. Resilient teenagers can assess events independently and are less inclined to engage in risky actions simply to fit in.

Peer influence is a strong force that can alter a person’s views, attitudes, and actions. While it can sometimes lead to poor decisions, it can also have a good effect when peers promote healthy habits and supportive behaviors.

Understanding the aspects that lead to peer influence, such as social media, family relationships, and the school environment, is critical for assisting kids in making sound decisions. By creating good support systems and raising awareness, we may help teenagers reject harmful pressures and create habits that benefit their health and well-being.

Feminist Initiative Launches Community Listening Series in Kibera

Feminist Initiative Launches Community Listening Series in Kibera

A grassroots feminist initiative convened 40 adolescent girls and young women aged 15 to 25 in Kibera on March 6 to launch the 2026 Community Listening Podcast Series under the programme “Passing the Baton Phase 3.”

Held on the eve of International Women’s Day, the half day event brought together young women, mentors, and feminist leaders under the theme “Give To Gain. Listening, Learning, and Leading Across Generations.” The session created a platform for feminist storytelling, grassroots political education, and leadership development.

Listening and Reflection

Participants listened to selected episodes from Passing the Baton Season 1, a podcast documenting the leadership journeys of seasoned feminists. Guided discussions allowed participants to connect the stories to real challenges affecting women and girls in their communities.

At the heart of the programme is the leadership concept of “Passing the Baton,” which emphasizes the intentional transfer of knowledge, mentorship, and opportunity between generations. Organizers noted that sustainable leadership in communities and institutions depends on preparing the next generation to continue the work.

Key Issues Raised

Two podcast episodes guided the day’s discussions.

One session explored violence against women, focusing on the growing threat of technology facilitated gender based violence, including the non consensual sharing of intimate images online. Participants discussed the risks young women face in digital spaces and the need for stronger awareness, legal protection, and accountability.

Another discussion focused on women and financial independence. Participants highlighted the importance of economic empowerment in enabling women to take part in leadership and decision making. Young women also reflected on the economic realities in informal settlements and how financial independence can expand opportunities.

Mentorship and Leadership

The event also introduced the Trio Tier Mentorship Programme, which connects experienced feminist leaders, mid career professionals, and emerging young leaders.

Brenda Kalekye, Board Member at Polycom Girls, said investing in young women strengthens communities.

“Passing the baton means believing in the next generation. Leadership is about preparing others to continue the journey.”

Taking Knowledge to Communities

Aphline Yogo, Programme Officer at Polycom Girls, said the listening series aims to bring feminist knowledge directly to communities.

“Many powerful stories exist in books or conferences. We want communities to listen together, reflect together, and connect these experiences to their own lives.”

She explained that earlier phases of the programme involved dialogues with feminist leaders and later digital documentation of their stories through video and podcasts.

Civic Awareness and Legal Protection

Mentor Sumba Njeri encouraged young women to participate in civic processes and understand governance systems that affect daily life.

Participants also discussed legal protections against digital abuse in Kenya under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018, which criminalizes the non consensual distribution of intimate images.

The session engaged 40 young women in leadership dialogue, while 15 to 20 participants expressed interest in ongoing mentorship opportunities. Discussions also raised awareness on economic empowerment, civic participation, and digital safety.

Kenya’s Future is Written in the Give to Gain Philosophy

Kenya’s Future is Written in the Give to Gain Philosophy

As we stand on the cusp of International Women’s Day 2026, it’s impossible to ignore the profound transformation driven by Kenyan women across every facet of our nation.

Their influence is not just growing; it is opening new possibilities and shaping a future for Kenya that is brighter and more equitable than ever before. This progress reflects an indomitable spirit that continues to transform adversity into opportunity.

This year, as the world unites under the theme “Give to Gain,” Kenya finds itself at the forefront of this powerful philosophy. The theme mirrors the Harambee spirit that has sustained our communities for generations. It reflects a deep understanding that true progress is not about individual accumulation, but about collective empowerment.

By intentionally investing in women through mentorship, resources, and opportunities, societies unlock a ripple effect of prosperity that benefits entire communities. When women thrive, families, communities, and economies grow stronger.

At Gilbeys, this belief forms part of how we operate and engage with our partners. For us, International Women’s Day is a reminder of the strength, creativity, and leadership that women bring to every level of our value chain.

When a woman is empowered, she does more than transform her own life; she uplifts those around her and helps shape the nation’s future. Evidence consistently shows that economies grow stronger and societies become more stable when women actively participate in leadership and economic activities.

This year’s theme therefore serves as both an economic imperative and a moral compass. It calls on institutions, leaders, and individuals to break down barriers and create opportunities where women can thrive. The growing presence of Kenyan women in business, arts, and leadership today reflects the impact of past investments and signals even greater potential ahead.

In that spirit, Gilbeys invites Kenyans to raise a glass to the extraordinary women who inspire us daily their resilience, their vision, and their invaluable contributions to the nation. We also celebrate the many women across our value chain whose dedication fuels not only our brand but also the spirit of Give to Gain in Kenya.

The “Give to Gain” Era: Why 2026 is the Year of the Pampered Queen

The “Give to Gain” Era: Why 2026 is the Year of the Pampered Queen

As I sat down to write this, I felt a familiar, grounding truth: As women, we don’t just deserve to be loved; we deserve to be pampered.

On the eve of International Women’s Day, I had one of those “soul-filler” dates with my best girl. You know the ones where you step away from the chaos of motherhood and the grind of your career to just unwind. What started as a normal chat turned into an evening of deep wisdom.

She reminded me of the Ecclesiastes woman, a woman meant to be loved, respected, and cherished. It was a gentle, firm reminder of our worth. There is nothing more magnetic than a woman who knows exactly what she brings to the table.

The 2026 Vibe: Give to Gain

This year, International Women’s Day is moving under the powerful theme “Give to Gain.” It’s all about reciprocity, mentorship, and the radical idea that investing in a woman is the fastest way to uplift an entire community.

But as we talk about “giving,” I have a question for the room specifically for the men.

The "Give to Gain" Era: Why 2026 is the Year of the Pampered Queen
The “Give to Gain” Era: Why 2026 is the Year of the Pampered Queen
A Challenge to the Modern King

The “Proverbs” blueprint isn’t just ancient text; it’s a timeless foundation. It tells us that women are valuable partners, not subordinates. In a world where we’ve mastered the art of “Self-Love” and learned to take care of ourselves so well we almost forgot how to be taken care of, I’m calling for a shift.

Men, it’s time to own the throne. Treat your lady like the Queen she is. I might sound biased, but the math is simple: When a woman is loved right, she pours that love back a thousand times over. It’s the age-old truth: Happy Wife, Happy Life.

The Big Question

Ladies, let’s get real for a second. Looking at your partner today the way he honors you, the way he proactively respects your dreams if you were given the chance to choose him all over again, would you? This is our moment to stand up and demand that “proactive honor.” Don’t just settle for being a “subordinate” in your own story.

Final Thoughts for the Intentional Queen

This year, let’s be Intentional Queens. Understand the “Give to Gain” flow. Give your wisdom, give your mentorship, and give your love but ensure you are in a space where you are gaining the respect and pampering you’ve earned.

Happy International Women’s Day! Let’s make 2026 the year we stop apologizing for our worth.

Is Social Media Changing How Young People See Themselves?

Is Social Media Changing How Young People See Themselves?

Social media has become a central part of young people’s lives worldwide. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat shape how young people communicate, express themselves, and increasingly how they view their own identity.

Research shows that teens and young adults are among the most active users of these platforms. As they scroll through carefully curated photos and highlight reels, many are exposed to idealized lifestyles and beauty standards.

Consequently, constant comparison with others can affect self-esteem, body image, and overall self-worth.

The Pressure of Online Perfection

Although social media connects people in powerful ways, it also creates pressure. Feeds often showcase “perfect” bodies, luxury lifestyles, and wellness routines.

Over time, this can lead young people to question their appearance, habits, or value.

At the same time, online validation plays a major role. Likes, comments, and views are often seen as signs of popularity or success. When posts receive little engagement, some users may feel disappointed, anxious, or inadequate.

This search for approval can sometimes lead people to share content that attracts attention rather than reflects their true identity.

Is Social Media Changing How Young People See Themselves?

The Positive Side of Social Media

However, social media is not entirely negative. Its impact often depends on how individuals use these platforms.

Many young people gain confidence by sharing their talents, achievements, and ideas online. Positive feedback from supportive communities can strengthen a sense of belonging. In addition, digital platforms allow users to explore interests, build networks, and even create professional opportunities.

Finding a Healthy Balance

To maintain a healthy relationship with social media, young people can take simple steps. Limiting screen time, following positive accounts, and focusing on personal goals rather than online validation can make a difference.

Engaging in hobbies and relationships outside the digital world also helps build confidence and self-worth.

Ultimately, social media is a powerful tool that can influence how young people see themselves. When used mindfully, it can encourage creativity and connection. However, true self-worth should come from within, not from likes or follower counts.

Her Health, Her Empire: The Smartest Investment a Woman Can Make

Her Health, Her Empire: The Smartest Investment a Woman Can Make

Tanya’s world is built on a buzz. As a social media powerhouse, her influence is her income. Every post, every video, every collaboration fuels a brand that reaches thousands in minutes. In the relentless world of digital creation, consistency isn’t just key; it’s currency.

In the heart of Nairobi, Lillian unlocks the door to her boutique. It’s more than a shop; it’s a brand she has built from the ground up, one customer, one online order, and one late night at a time. Her business thrives on her presence and her personal touch.

Meanwhile, Janet, a top-tier consultant, juggles high-stakes projects for multiple organizations. Her expertise is her product, and her calendar is her revenue stream. As a freelancer, her earnings are a direct reflection of her ability to deliver, day in and day out.

These women are the face of Kenya’s new economy. They are creators, entrepreneurs, and independent experts. They are building empires, supporting families, and defining their own success. Yet, for all their drive and achievement, they share a silent vulnerability: their entire livelihood is one health crisis away from grinding to a halt.

If Tanya gets sick, the algorithm moves on. If Lillian closes her shop for a week, her hard-earned savings become hospital bills. If Janet can’t work, the projects stop and so does her income.

Their stories reflect a wider reality. In Kenya, insurance penetration hovers at about 2.3% of GDP. This means a significant portion of health expenses are paid out-of-pocket, forcing families to dip into savings or disrupt their plans when unexpected medical costs arise.

For women who are the engines of their own careers, this isn’t just a statistic it’s a risk that threatens everything they’ve built.

A health crisis shouldn’t mean a financial crisis. This is where health insurance transforms from a simple expense into a strategic investment in your future.

For Tanya, it provides peace of mind to create and connect, knowing her brand and her health are both protected.

For Lillian, it means her business capital can continue fueling growth instead of covering medical emergencies. For Janet, it offers the confidence to pursue ambitious projects without worrying that access to quality care depends on an employer.

With Equity Health Insurance, women gain more than just medical coverage they gain stability, confidence, and the freedom to focus on what matters most.

Financial protection against unexpected medical expenses, allowing savings and business capital to remain intact

The Silent Epidemic: Hypertension in Young Adults

0
The Silent Epidemic: Hypertension in Young Adults

Hypertension is no longer a disorder limited to middle age. People in their twenties and thirties are increasingly being diagnosed with high blood pressure at routine checks, frequently with no warning signs.

Hypertension, previously thought to be an aging disease, is quietly gaining traction as a critical public health problem for a generation that rarely considers itself vulnerable.

What Is Hypertension/ High Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure is a common condition that affects the body’s arteries. It’s also called hypertension. If you have high blood pressure, the force of the blood pushing against the artery walls is consistently too high.

It can cause serious problems such as a heart attack or stroke. Because high blood pressure rarely causes symptoms, it is commonly referred to as a “silent killer.”

What’s considered high blood pressure varies slightly based on where you live.

According to the statistics by the World Health Organisation, an estimated 1.4 billion adults aged 30–79 years worldwide had hypertension, which represents 33% of the population in this age range.

Why Young Adults Are Increasingly Affected?
  1. Obesity: Excess body fat raises blood pressure through a variety of ways, increases insulin resistance, which promotes sodium retention. Triggers chronic low-grade inflammation that stiffens blood vessels.

Young adults who are obese are substantially more likely to acquire early-onset hypertension, and the duration of exposure increases their future cardiovascular risk.

  1. Lack of Physical Activity: When a person is not physically active, the heart and blood vessels lose efficiency. Regular activity helps blood vessels remain flexible and increases circulation. Without exercise, the body is more likely to acquire weight, and the heart has to work harder to circulate blood. Long hours of sitting, whether at a desk, in traffic, or at home, raise the risk of developing high blood pressure over time.
  2. Alcohol Consumption: Drinking alcohol frequently or in significant quantities can cause high blood pressure. Alcohol stimulates the neurological system, causing the heart to beat quicker and the blood vessels to contract. It also adds calories, which may contribute to weight gain, another risk factor for hypertension. While occasional drinking may not be harmful, regular heavy intake increases the risk of long-term blood pressure issues.
  3. Smoking: Smoking has an immediate effect on the blood vessels. Nicotine causes them to tighten, raising blood pressure briefly. Smoking gradually erodes the artery lining, making it less flexible and more susceptible to occlusion. Even although it does not necessarily result in persistent hypertension, smoking raises the risk of heart disease and stroke, particularly in persons with pre-existing high blood pressure.
  4. Some Health Conditions: Even in young people, high blood pressure can result from certain medical disorders. Diabetes, thyroid issues, kidney disease, and sleep disorders including sleep apnea can all affect the body’s ability to control blood pressure. In these situations, managing the underlying illness is crucial to successfully managing hypertension.

Why Hypertension in Young Adults Is More Dangerous

a) Heart failure before age 50

Continuous strain on the heart might cause it to deteriorate over time. Long-term hypertension, if left untreated, can progress to heart failure, a condition in which the heart is no longer able to properly pump blood, which is becoming more common in young adults.

b) longer lifetime exposure to high blood pressure

When hypertension develops in the 20s or early 30s, blood arteries are subjected to high pressure for decades. This persistent strain gradually weakens the artery walls, making them thicker, narrower, and less flexible. The cumulative harm increases with duration of exposure.

c) Higher risk of early stroke

Persistent high blood pressure weakens and stiffens the blood vessels in the brain. Over time, this raises the chance of blockages or ruptures, which can result in stroke at a far earlier age than previously thought.

d) Early heart disease

The heart must work more than usual to pump blood while hypertensive. Because of this ongoing strain, the heart muscle may enlarge (a condition called left ventricular hypertrophy), which raises the risk of coronary artery disease and heart attacks at a younger age.

Role of Stress in Modern Youth Culture

Stress has become a defining aspect of modern adolescent culture, and the effects on blood pressure are frequently underestimated.

Many young individuals are dealing with employment insecurity, precarious contracts, and severe labor market rivalry, all while trying to keep up with rising urban living costs. The drive to achieve fuels a hustle culture that values long hours and constant productivity, leaving little time for relaxation or rehabilitation.

Academic expectations and employment insecurity exacerbate anxiety among students and recent graduates. Simultaneously, social media platforms heighten comparison, exposing young people to meticulously managed lifestyles that can exacerbate feelings of inadequacy and financial stress.

How to prevent high blood pressure in young adults

~ Getting enough sleep (7 – 9 hours per night)

~ Quit Smoking

~ Managing weight

~ Exercise Regularly

~ Eating Nutritious food

Hypertension in young adults is no longer a faraway health concern, it is a developing issue caused by modern lifestyles and uncontrolled stress. Without early detection, consistent screening, and purposeful lifestyle modifications, a generation may face decades of preventable cardiovascular damage.

Digital Detox: Can We Truly Disconnect Anymore?

Digital Detox: Can We Truly Disconnect Anymore?

In today’s hyperconnected society, being offline can feel radical, even unsafe. However, even taking a little break from screens might reveal surprising benefits such as improved thinking, deeper focus, and a quieter mind.

As digital exhaustion grows more frequent, the question is no longer whether we are spending too much time online, but whether we even know how to disconnect.

What Is Digital Detox?

A digital detox is when you avoid using mobile devices or the internet for an extended period of time. It may help some people connect with their surroundings and become less reliant on their electronic devices.

The inappropriate use of digital devices is a developing concern, particularly among young people and students. Using devices on a regular basis can become a distraction from daily life, or in some situations, a therapeutic method.

Digital Detox does not necessarily include uninstalling all social media apps, turning off your phone permanently, or disconnecting from the internet entirely. For others, this may entail shutting off non-essential notifications that regularly disrupt focus.

Others may choose to set aside certain screen-free hours in the evening, avoid using gadgets during meals, or spend full weekends offline. The technique varies from person to person due to differences in digital consumption patterns. What matters is not the severity of the deed, but the motivation behind it.

One of the most common misconceptions regarding digital detox is that it entails fully renouncing technology. In actuality, this is neither realistic nor sustainable in a society where work, education, communication, and even entertainment is all digitally mediated.

Digital Detox: Can We Truly Disconnect Anymore?
Digital Detox: Can We Truly Disconnect Anymore?
Screen Fatigue: The Psychological Impact

Beyond convenience and connectedness, there is a less obvious consequence of constant screen exposure, mental tiredness.

Each notification, vibration, and pop-up requires a small amount of our attention. While each interruption appears tiny, the cumulative effect raises cognitive load, or the amount of mental work required to digest information. Over time, the brain gets overstimulated, continually changing from one task to the next without ever falling into deep focus.

Doom-scrolling, or the tendency to indefinitely ingest bad or repetitive content, further erodes concentration. What starts as a short check-in quickly devolves into extended periods of passive scrolling that leave the mind exhausted rather than informed.

Multitasking increases the problem. Switching between emails, messages, social media, and professional activities gives the impression of activity, yet research consistently demonstrates that task switching diminishes efficiency and raises the rate of errors. Instead of working more quickly, we work in brief, distracted bursts.

Screen time also affects normal sleep cycles. The blue light emitted by phones and computers interferes with the body’s generation of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep. Late-night scrolling may appear innocent, but it delays and degrades sleep quality, contributing to irritation and decreased focus the next day.

Constant connectedness can result in reduced attention spans, mental weariness, and even increased worry. When the mind is rarely granted a moment of silence, clarity is difficult to maintain.

Can We Truly Disconnect?

Switching off seems straightforward. In actuality, modern life is firmly ingrained in computerized systems. Work, relationships, and information flow mostly through screens, making complete disengagement difficult and, in some situations, impractical.

The Realities to be considered:

Social life is largely digital – Birthdays are remembered through notifications, friendships are maintained through conversations, and communities are established using online platforms.

Many jobs require constant online presence – Emails, virtual meetings, cloud-based systems, and instant messaging platforms are now considered normal business tools.

Work-from-home arrangements depend entirely on screens from communication to task management.

In such a situation, complete detachment from technology may be not only unachievable but also disruptive. The more practical goal is not eternal isolation, but established boundaries that limit when and how we engage.

Rather than forsaking the digital world, the key is to learn to engage with it without enabling it to dominate attention, productivity, and mental well-being.

While complete separation may be unrealistic, minor structural changes might make internet use healthier and more mindful.

Digital Detox: Can We Truly Disconnect Anymore?
Digital Detox: Can We Truly Disconnect Anymore?
Scheduled screen-free hours

Setting aside specified times of the day, such as early mornings or before bed, to allow for a mental reset and undisturbed concentration.

Notification Management

Disable non-essential notifications to prevent continual interruptions and cognitive overload, leaving just those required for work or urgent communication.

Intentional content consumption.

Choosing when and why to interact online, rather than scrolling out of habit. This includes consuming information on purpose rather than reacting to algorithm-driven feeds.

Physical activities replace scrolling.

Walking, jogging, reading, or face-to-face discussions can help restore concentration and prevent overstimulation.

Ultimately, digital detox is about taking control over how we use technology rather than quitting it altogether. In a world where screens facilitate work, learning, and social interaction, complete detachment may be impossible, but conscious engagement is possible.

Setting boundaries, emphasizing conscious use, and creating screen-free moments can help us protect our focus, mental health, and even sleep.
