Kisumu Comes Alive as AfroExchange Returns

Johnnie Walker’s signature cultural experience brought together music lovers, artists and creatives for an unforgettable celebration of African culture, creativity and connection.

There is something magical about a night where music, art and culture come together.

The energy feels different. Conversations flow more naturally. Strangers become friends. Creativity takes centre stage, and people find themselves connected through a shared appreciation for authentic experiences.

That was the atmosphere in Kisumu on June 13 as Johnnie Walker brought back AfroExchange, its signature cultural experience designed to celebrate African creativity through music, art and cultural exchange.

Hosted at Berlin Lounge 042, the second edition of AfroExchange in Kisumu built on the success of its debut event in the city last November. The event attracted music lovers, creatives, artists and culture enthusiasts eager to immerse themselves in an evening dedicated to African expression in all its forms.

More than just a night out, AfroExchange served as a reminder of the power of creativity to bring communities together and shape modern African culture.

A Night Powered by Music

From the moment guests arrived, the atmosphere was electric.

DJs Detrix and Most Wanted kept the crowd energized with carefully curated sets that blended contemporary African sounds with crowd favourites. Their performances created a lively soundtrack for the evening and kept guests on their feet throughout the night.

The excitement reached another level when headline artist Okello Max stepped onto the stage.

Known for music deeply rooted in Dholuo culture, the singer delivered one of the night’s standout performances. His dramatic entrance immediately captured the audience before he launched into a set featuring fan favourites such as Taya, Diana and Nakufa.

The crowd responded enthusiastically, singing along word for word and transforming the venue into a celebration of local identity, storytelling and musical talent.

More Than Entertainment

While music remained at the heart of the experience, AfroExchange offered much more than live performances.

Guests explored interactive art installations, visual showcases and creative spaces that highlighted Kenya’s growing artistic landscape. These immersive experiences encouraged attendees to engage with local talent while appreciating the many forms of creativity shaping contemporary African culture.

One particularly memorable moment came towards the end of Okello Max’s performance when he received a hand-drawn portrait created by an emerging artist from the region.

The gesture reflected AfroExchange’s commitment to supporting local creatives and fostering collaboration across different artistic disciplines.

Guests also enjoyed a selection of expertly crafted cocktails that complemented the premium atmosphere of the evening, adding another layer to the multi-sensory experience.

Celebrating African Creativity

According to Duncan Mokaya, Shopper Manager at Johnnie Walker, AfroExchange reflects the brand’s ongoing commitment to championing African creativity and supporting individuals who continue to shape culture across the continent.

“Johnnie Walker has always stood for progress and the people who keep moving culture forward. AfroExchange reflects our commitment to championing African creativity by creating spaces where music, art and culture intersect. Through this platform, we celebrate the creators, innovators and cultural tastemakers who are shaping modern Africa while inspiring consumers to take bold steps in pursuit of their passions,” he said.

At its core, AfroExchange is inspired by the belief that music, art and fashion are among Africa’s strongest cultural connectors.

The platform celebrates the stories, sounds and influences that travel across African cities while highlighting the unique identity and creative energy that make each destination special.

Kisumu’s Growing Cultural Influence

The successful return of AfroExchange also highlighted Kisumu’s growing reputation as a vibrant destination for entertainment, nightlife and contemporary African culture.

As more creative experiences find a home in the city, Kisumu continues to strengthen its position as an important cultural hub. Events such as AfroExchange play a key role in this growth by creating spaces where artists, creatives and audiences can connect and collaborate.

For many attendees, the evening represented more than entertainment. It was an opportunity to celebrate creativity, discover new talent and connect with people who share a passion for African culture.

“We are delighted to have returned to Kisumu and to continue building experiences that bring people together through creativity and shared cultural expression,” Duncan added.

As the night came to an end, AfroExchange once again demonstrated the power of music, art and culture to create meaningful connections. Through the platform, Johnnie Walker continues to celebrate African creativity while inspiring communities to embrace self-expression, cultural exchange and progress.
