Why the World Raises a Glass to Tequila Every July

Every July, tequila lovers around the world celebrate one of the most iconic spirits, recognising not only its distinctive taste but also the centuries-old craftsmanship behind every bottle.

While World Tequila Day is marked annually on 24 July, the entire month has become a tribute to the heritage, patience and expertise that transform the Blue Weber agave into authentic tequila.

Unlike many spirits, tequila begins with a single ingredient, the Blue Weber agave. Grown in the volcanic soils of Mexico, the plant takes between six and eight years to mature before it is ready for harvest.

Skilled jimadores carefully trim away its leaves by hand to reveal the piña, the heart of the agave. The piñas are then slow-cooked, fermented and distilled, with each step contributing to the tequila’s final character.

Three Expressions, Three Unique Experiences
The production process gives rise to three distinct tequila expressions, each offering a unique drinking experience.

Blanco is bottled shortly after distillation, preserving the fresh, vibrant flavours of agave with bright citrus notes that make it ideal for cocktails such as the Margarita and Paloma.

Reposado, meaning “rested”, is aged for several months in oak barrels, developing smooth vanilla and spice notes while maintaining the freshness of the agave. Añejo spends at least a year maturing in oak, creating a richer, more complex spirit with layers of toasted oak, dried fruit and warm spice, best enjoyed neat or in premium cocktails.

Don Julio Brings Tequila Culture to Kenya
To mark World Tequila Month, Don Julio introduced Kenyan consumers to the story behind tequila through a series of immersive experiences at select premium venues, including Ciel Lounge, Club 11:11 and INTI.

Guests explored curated cocktails and signature serves prepared by professionally trained mixologists, each designed to highlight the distinctive characteristics of Blanco, Reposado and Añejo. Rather than focusing solely on tequila as a party drink, the experiences encouraged consumers to appreciate the craftsmanship, heritage and tradition behind every pour.

Whether enjoying a crisp Blanco Margarita, a refreshing Reposado Paloma or an elegant Añejo Old Fashioned, each cocktail reflected the years of dedication that begin in the agave fields of Jalisco before reaching the glass.
