June Gachui: Redefining Live Music Through Authenticity and Intimacy

As Nairobi’s creative scene expands, few personalities have shaped its evolution as boldly as June Gachui, advocate, actress, radio host, music curator, and all-around creative force.

With nearly two decades in legal practice and a lifelong love for the arts, June has built a rare bridge between professional excellence and creative innovation.

She describes herself as “an aspiring, happy person, multifaceted, a polymath.”
“Ever since I was young, I’ve always been a performing artist,” she says. “I used to sing in church, act in school… and I never stopped.”

Her parents nurtured that artistic curiosity early on. “My mom put me in music school. They encouraged me to pursue it, as long as I didn’t forget academics.”

Living abroad exposed her to cultures where creativity was fully embraced. “We used to do concerts from the time I was eight. I saw how creativity was encouraged.”

Today, she combines all these identities, but one of her most powerful contributions is Bare Sessions, the intimate live music experience now closing its second season.

Reimagining Live Music in Its Rawest Form

Bare Sessions was born from a simple but bold question: What happens when you strip music back to its essence?

“We can enjoy music differently,” June explains. “What if we stripped bare all those things that confuse the eye? We are left with the artists and the songs.”

The concept delivers raw storytelling, emotion, and vulnerability. Every performance is fully live. Artists share the inspiration behind their music.

They experiment with new arrangements not because the original versions were lacking, but because Bare Sessions encourages freshness and reinvention.

The result? A platform where musicians and audiences reconnect with honest, unfiltered artistry.

Reviving Legends While Inspiring New Audiences

June is passionate about celebrating artists with long careers.
“You can get bored even with the work you do,” she says. “Fans tell you to sing the same four songs. But what about the one I did yesterday?”

Bare Sessions gives icons like Eric Wainaina, Jua Cali, and Dela space to rediscover their craft. It also attracts younger listeners who may not have grown up with these legends but find them relevant through the Sessions.

“Younger audience members come because the trumpeter is their friend,” she says, laughing. “The music is still relevant.”

A Distinct Format in Nairobi’s Creative Landscape

Bare Sessions is unlike any other event in the city. Held at the Nairobi National Museum amphitheatre, it accommodates only 140 people, creating rare intimacy.

“It feels like the artists are in their living room, talking to their friends,” June says.

A ticket includes cocktails, food, and a carefully curated ambience. All instruments are played live, no backing tracks. Audience members ask artists questions directly. The sessions are recorded and shared online, but June keeps some moments exclusive for in-person attendees.

“Nobody else in Nairobi is doing this kind of event,” she says confidently.

Craftsmanship at the Core

For June, craftsmanship is everything.

“Craftsmanship is skill, time, experience, excellence, and a little creativity,” she says.

Her 15 years of experience in production have sharpened her instincts. She knows what audiences crave and how to deliver consistently.

“We have made mistakes and we have gotten it very well,” she admits. “People say, ‘If you’re the one doing the event, I’m coming.’”

That trust reflects her commitment to elevating Kenya’s live music culture.

The Season 2 Finale

With the finale happening this Saturday, June’s anticipation is contagious.

“I expect fire. Fire in every sense of the word,” she says.

Artists initially felt uneasy performing with unfamiliar bands. “You’ve taken away my comfort,” they complained. But the outcome exceeded expectations. “They all did an amazing job. Now they want to celebrate their successes.”

Rehearsals feel like full-on concerts, filled with laughter, dancing, and shared creative energy.

June promises a finale rich with storytelling, memorable performances, and striking visuals styled by Brian Babu.

“I’m not going to say what color we’ll be in on Saturday,” she teases. “Come and watch the show.”

A Partnership That Elevates the Experience

Tanqueray became part of the Bare Sessions journey in February 2024, and the partnership has transformed the show’s feel.

The collaboration began during Sanaipei Tande’s show and immediately elevated hospitality. Guests enjoy world-class cocktails crafted by expert mixologists, not generic drinks, but creations inspired by performing artists.

Dela’s cocktail was named Mafeelings, Eric Wainaina’s was called Sawasawa. Each reflected the mood of the music.

Beyond the drinks, Tanqueray ensures accessibility and comfort. Bottles are available at fair prices, reducing movement and keeping guests immersed in the show.

With Tanqueray, Bare Sessions doesn’t just deliver music; it delivers a refined lifestyle experience.

What June Hopes Audiences Take Away

June wants audiences to appreciate the depth and brilliance of Kenyan musicians.

“I hope they appreciate these artists in a different way,” she says.

She also highlights the world-class arrangers behind the scenes, such as Kato Change and Lisa Oduor-Noah, whose artistry elevates every performance.

“Kenya is where it’s at,” she says proudly. “We have already arrived. It may not be a stage with 20,000 people, but we have arrived.”

A Legacy in the Making

As Bare Sessions closes Season 2, one truth is clear:
June Gachui is not just producing shows; she is building a legacy.

A legacy of authenticity.
A legacy of artistry.
A legacy of truth.

She is reshaping how live music is experienced, heard, and felt in Kenya.

Understanding Narcolepsy: The Silent Sleep Disorder

Understanding Narcolepsy: The Silent Sleep Disorder

Many people fear illness, especially when they do not understand it or know how to manage it. Today, more individuals are struggling with conditions that affect their daily lives from bipolar disorder and PTSD to schizophrenia and eating disorders.

Among these, narcolepsy remains one of the least understood, yet it significantly disrupts daily functioning.

What Is Narcolepsy?

Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder that causes overwhelming daytime sleepiness. People with narcolepsy struggle to stay awake for long periods, often falling asleep suddenly and without warning. These sudden sleep attacks can occur anywhere even while walking or during a conversation.

Globally, an estimated 1 in 2,000 people live with narcolepsy. However, because many cases go undiagnosed, the true number is likely much higher.

Symptoms to Watch For

Narcolepsy affects the brain’s ability to regulate sleep and wakefulness. Its symptoms can vary from mild to severe.

Common signs include:

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness

  • Sudden sleep attacks

  • Sleep paralysis

  • Hallucinations when falling asleep or waking up

  • Cataplexy (sudden loss of muscle control triggered by strong emotions)

  • Disturbed nighttime sleep or obstructive sleep apnea

Understanding Narcolepsy: The Silent Sleep Disorder
Understanding Narcolepsy: The Silent Sleep Disorder

Cataplexy is one of the most striking features. A person may suddenly become weak, drop objects, buckle at the knees, or collapse after laughing, feeling excited, or getting angry.

About 25%–50% of people with narcolepsy experience sleep paralysis, which can be terrifying but is not dangerous.

What Causes Narcolepsy?

Researchers link narcolepsy to a mix of genetic, environmental, and neurological factors.

Key contributors include:

  • Low levels of hypocretin, a neurotransmitter that regulates wakefulness

  • Genetics, as the condition may run in families

  • Brain injuries, infections, or autoimmune reactions (rare but possible)

Narcolepsy typically appears between the ages of 10 and 30 and affects both men and women equally.

Why Awareness Matters

Narcolepsy is often misunderstood, yet early recognition can improve treatment and quality of life. Increased public awareness helps people spot the symptoms and seek medical help instead of dismissing them as “being lazy” or “oversleeping.”

There is also an urgent need for more government involvement especially in education, screening, and support services. Many people struggle for years before receiving a diagnosis because the condition is rarely discussed.

Moving Forward

Narcolepsy may be a lifelong condition, but it can be managed with the right treatment, lifestyle changes, and support. Understanding its symptoms is the first step toward helping affected individuals live safely, confidently, and without stigma.

The Unspoken Childhood: Breaking the Silence Around Trauma

0
The Unspoken Childhood: Breaking the Silence Around Trauma

A child may grow up without visible scars, yet the emotional wounds of fear, neglect, or abuse can last a lifetime. Childhood trauma often shapes how someone thinks, feels, relates to others, and reacts to stress long into adulthood.

Still, in many cultures, it remains a taboo topic dismissed, minimized, or ignored.

What Is Childhood Trauma?

Childhood trauma refers to overwhelming experiences that exceed a child’s ability to cope. These moments can have lasting effects on mental, emotional, and physical health.

It may stem from:

  • Abuse or neglect

  • Witnessing violence

  • Exploitation

  • Loss of a loved one

  • Accidents or natural disasters

Such experiences disrupt healthy brain development and stress responses. This raises the risk of long-term issues like anxiety, depression, difficulty regulating emotions, and low self-esteem.

The World Health Organization estimates that 40 million children under 15 experience violence every year. The resulting trauma, depending on severity and context, can trigger lifelong medical and psychological consequences.

Common Causes of Childhood Trauma

Childhood trauma can arise from many situations, each with short-term and long-term effects.

1. Bullying

Bullying whether physical, verbal, or online deeply affects a child’s emotional well-being. It can impair concentration, lower self-worth, and weaken school performance.

2. Community Violence

Exposure to gang violence, riots, shootings, or unrest creates constant fear. Ongoing exposure increases the likelihood of long-term trauma and emotional withdrawal.

3. Natural Disasters

Events such as floods or drought can shatter a child’s sense of safety. Losing a home or belongings often leaves children feeling insecure, anxious, and helpless for years.

4. Domestic Violence Between Parents

Growing up in a home filled with conflict can leave deep emotional scars. Watching parents fight—while feeling powerless to stop it creates fear that stays in a child’s memory forever.

5. Physical Abuse

Physical abuse is intentional harm. It causes immediate injuries and long-term psychological effects like PTSD, aggression, mistrust, and emotional instability. Many children struggle socially and academically as a result.

The Unspoken Childhood: Breaking the Silence Around Trauma
The Unspoken Childhood: Breaking the Silence Around Trauma
The Lasting Impact of Ignored Trauma

Unaddressed childhood trauma increases the likelihood of both physical and mental health issues later in life. Children with at least one traumatic experience are more prone to:

  • High-risk behaviours (smoking, drug use, alcoholism)

  • Chronic illnesses such as heart disease and cancer

  • Poor stress management

  • Anxiety, depression, and intense emotional reactions

Conditions linked to untreated trauma include:

  • PTSD

  • Acute Stress Disorder

  • Adjustment Disorders

  • Reactive Attachment Disorder

  • Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder

  • Personality Disorders

These challenges can persist well into adulthood without proper care and support.

Pathways to Healing

The World Health Organization affirms that healing is possible. With the right interventions, individuals can recover, thrive, and reclaim their emotional wellbeing.

Helpful approaches include:

  • Trauma-informed therapy

  • Supportive family and community networks

  • Healthy coping skills

  • Grounding techniques

  • Exercise, nutrition, and self-care

  • Building resilience through positive relationships

  • Creating safe environments where children feel protected and heard

Healing requires time, patience, and compassion but recovery can transform lives. Addressing childhood trauma is the first step toward breaking generational cycles of pain and creating healthier, more supportive communities.

A Major Leap in Intelligence and Capability
Google has unveiled Gemini 3, its most advanced AI model to date, bringing state-of-the-art reasoning and powerful new agentic abilities to millions of users.
The launch marks a major shift in how Google products will work, with AI becoming more intuitive, interactive, and helpful for people in Kenya and across Africa.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, said the company is entering a new chapter focused on intelligence, agents, and personalisation.

Kenya stands out as a prime adopter, with Google Search data showing a 150% surge in interest in AI over the past year, and searches for “AI jobs” more than tripling. The appetite for advanced tools continues to rise as Kenyans look to tech to power careers and new economic opportunities.

Gemini 3 Pro, the first release in the new family, is designed to handle reasoning with greater depth and nuance. It delivers PhD-level problem-solving and sets new records on major AI benchmarks, including a 91.9% score on GPQA Diamond.

The model can understand video, images, diagrams, and even handwritten notes, enabling more accurate and meaningful responses.

Smarter Search, Stronger Tools, and New Agentic Power
Gemini 3 Pro also brings a more natural interaction style, offering clearer and more insightful responses. It supports “vibe coding,” allowing developers to turn ideas into working prototypes using simple language. Its new agentic abilities help it understand intent, plan tasks, and complete multi-step actions with minimal user input.

These upgrades enable a new experience in Google Search. For the first time, a Gemini model is available in Search on day one. In AI Mode, the model creates dynamic visual layouts, simulations, and tools based on the user’s query.

A learner can interact with a physics simulation, while someone researching a mortgage can receive a customised loan calculator instantly.

Google is also upgrading the Gemini app with a more capable personal agent. For users subscribed to Google AI Ultra, the new experimental Gemini Agent can perform complex tasks across Google apps. It can organise an inbox, prioritise tasks, draft responses, compare rental options, or prepare bookings all while leaving the user in full control.

A New Platform for Developers: Google Antigravity
To help builders create their own intelligent agents, Google has introduced Antigravity, an agentic development platform. It acts as a mission control system where developers can orchestrate multiple agents to plan, build, and fix software automatically.

The platform is grounded in trust, autonomy, and feedback. It gives developers clear oversight, context, and verifiable outputs, allowing AI to handle the heavy lifting while humans steer the vision. This shift moves software creation from manual coding to strategic supervision.

Google says Gemini 3 has passed its most extensive safety evaluations yet. Gemini 3 Pro is available starting today through the Gemini app and to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers within AI Mode in Search.

What Happens to Your M-PESA When You Die?

What Happens to Your M-PESA When You Die?

When someone dies, their M-PESA account does not disappear. However, the money inside it does not automatically go to their family. The old saying “You can’t take it with you” applies here too. Your possessions remain behind including your M-PESA balance.

For banks, insurance, or investments, many people know the process of accessing a deceased person’s funds. But with M-PESA, the steps are often misunderstood. So what exactly happens to your M-PESA money when you die?

Safaricom requires the family to report the death of the account owner. “If the person passes, the family member or next of kin must inform Safaricom and inquire about the balance. You write a letter indicating your name, relationship to the deceased, and your request,” explains Selline Akoth, Retail Operations Lead at Safaricom.

What Happens to Your M-PESA When You Die?
What Happens to Your M-PESA When You Die?
How Families Can Claim M-PESA Funds

Safaricom has three categories for accessing a deceased person’s M-PESA funds, each with different requirements.

1. Between KSh1 and KSh30,000
The claimant must present the original death certificate, their ID, and a letter from the local administration (chief, assistant chief, deputy county commissioner, or county commissioner). The letter identifies the person authorized to receive the funds. An affidavit from a commissioner for oaths is also required.

2. Between KSh30,001 and KSh200,000
Safaricom requires authorization from a public trustee (Attorney General’s office), deputy county commissioner, or county commissioner, plus the claimant’s documents.

3. Above KSh200,000
This falls under full succession. The claimant must provide a grant of probate or a letter of administration, as guided by the Law of Succession Act (Cap 160). This process can take months or even years, depending on complexity and disputes.

Families have two years to claim the money before it is transferred to the Unclaimed Financial Assets Authority (UFAA). Even if the SIM card expires, the money does not — UFAA holds it.

Loans such as Fuliza and M-Shwari are closed once the customer dies.

Some people consider withdrawing the money using the deceased person’s phone instead of following the procedure. This is illegal. Agent withdrawals require the original ID of the registered owner.

“Safaricom does not authorize next of kin to withdraw money for the deceased. It is criminal because that is not your money. It should go to the rightful next of kin through succession,” Selline explains.

Kenya Marks First World Cervical Cancer Elimination Day with Mt Kenya Run

Kenya Marks First World Cervical Cancer Elimination Day with Mt Kenya Run

17 November 2025 marks the first World Cervical Cancer Elimination Day. The global call to action urges countries to boost HPV vaccination, screening, treatment, and access to care.

Kenya has made progress in prevention. The Ministry of Health introduced HPV vaccination in 2019 and expanded HPV testing and treatment. This year, the government adopted a single-dose HPV vaccine for all 10-year-old girls. The dose is safe, effective, and recommended for cervical cancer prevention.

KILELE Health Association, together with Ultra Runners Kenya and Arch Treks Safaris, is leading a symbolic challenge. Ten runners will climb Mt Kenya’s Point Lenana in 10 hours. Their effort honours the 10 women Kenya loses every day to cervical cancer. The run also launches a month-long campaign to raise awareness and funds.

KILELE Health is encouraging Kenyans to take simple actions. They can talk to others about HPV vaccination, take girls for vaccination, urge women to get screened, or support those in treatment. The organisation says no woman should die from a preventable disease.

The runners will return in January 2026 for a second challenge. They plan to complete three summits in two days during Kenya’s Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. Survivors and caregivers will also take part.

KILELE Health Movement for 2025

Throughout the year, KILELE Health has led a national movement of survivors and caregivers. They have climbed mountains, shared stories, and engaged communities to raise awareness. The Mt Kenya challenge is the highlight of this five-year awareness tradition.

On 24 November 2025, the Africa Cervical Health Alliance will launch the ACHA ASPIRE Scorecard. This tool will track progress in vaccination, screening, treatment, governance, and financing. It will guide decision-makers and improve accountability. The scorecard will be tested in 12 African countries in 2026.

Benda Kithaka, Executive Director at KILELE Health, says the country must act now. She notes that cervical cancer is preventable and treatable. She calls on the media to help keep the issue visible. She also urges support for survivors and families.

Race Director Nyaruai Muhoro says each runner is dedicating the climb to a woman affected by cancer. She hopes the challenge will raise awareness, funds, and reduce stigma.

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women. In 2022, more than 660,000 women were diagnosed globally and over 350,000 died. In Kenya, 5,845 cases are recorded each year and 3,591 women lose their lives.

Kenya’s message this year is clear. Prevention is possible, action is urgent, and together the country can move closer to eliminating cervical cancer.
