Why the World Raises a Glass to Tequila Every July

Every July, tequila lovers around the world celebrate one of the most iconic spirits, recognising not only its distinctive taste but also the centuries-old craftsmanship behind every bottle.

While World Tequila Day is marked annually on 24 July, the entire month has become a tribute to the heritage, patience and expertise that transform the Blue Weber agave into authentic tequila.

Unlike many spirits, tequila begins with a single ingredient, the Blue Weber agave. Grown in the volcanic soils of Mexico, the plant takes between six and eight years to mature before it is ready for harvest.

Skilled jimadores carefully trim away its leaves by hand to reveal the piña, the heart of the agave. The piñas are then slow-cooked, fermented and distilled, with each step contributing to the tequila’s final character.

Three Expressions, Three Unique Experiences
The production process gives rise to three distinct tequila expressions, each offering a unique drinking experience.

Blanco is bottled shortly after distillation, preserving the fresh, vibrant flavours of agave with bright citrus notes that make it ideal for cocktails such as the Margarita and Paloma.

Reposado, meaning “rested”, is aged for several months in oak barrels, developing smooth vanilla and spice notes while maintaining the freshness of the agave. Añejo spends at least a year maturing in oak, creating a richer, more complex spirit with layers of toasted oak, dried fruit and warm spice, best enjoyed neat or in premium cocktails.

Don Julio Brings Tequila Culture to Kenya
To mark World Tequila Month, Don Julio introduced Kenyan consumers to the story behind tequila through a series of immersive experiences at select premium venues, including Ciel Lounge, Club 11:11 and INTI.

Guests explored curated cocktails and signature serves prepared by professionally trained mixologists, each designed to highlight the distinctive characteristics of Blanco, Reposado and Añejo. Rather than focusing solely on tequila as a party drink, the experiences encouraged consumers to appreciate the craftsmanship, heritage and tradition behind every pour.

Whether enjoying a crisp Blanco Margarita, a refreshing Reposado Paloma or an elegant Añejo Old Fashioned, each cocktail reflected the years of dedication that begin in the agave fields of Jalisco before reaching the glass.

A Toast to Craftsmanship
As Kenyans join the global celebration of World Tequila Month, the occasion serves as a reminder that authentic tequila is built on patience, expertise and uncompromising quality.

Behind every bottle of Don Julio lies generations of craftsmanship and a production process that cannot be rushed. It is this commitment to excellence that has earned tequila worldwide recognition and makes every glass an invitation to savour not only its flavour, but also the remarkable journey behind it.

TECNO POVA’s ‘Own Your Move’ Campaign Inspires Kenyans to Define Success on Their Own Terms

TECNO POVA’s ‘Own Your Move’ Campaign Inspires Kenyans to Define Success on Their Own Terms

The new POVA Curve 2 5G arrives in Kenya with a campaign celebrating individuality, ambition and the growing digital lifestyles of young professionals and creators.

As more young Kenyans embrace entrepreneurship, remote work, content creation and side hustles, the definition of success is becoming increasingly personal. Recognising this shift, TECNO POVA has launched its new “Own Your Move” brand platform in Kenya, a campaign that celebrates independent thinkers who are carving out their own paths in life and work.

The campaign launches alongside the TECNO POVA Curve 2 5G, a smartphone designed for consumers who need dependable performance, long-lasting battery life and seamless connectivity without compromising on style.

At the heart of the campaign is the bold expression, “They say ________. I disagree.” Rather than encouraging rebellion for its own sake, the message invites Kenyans to challenge assumptions, embrace individuality and make decisions based on their own ambitions instead of popular opinion.

According to Mildred Agoya, Marketing Manager at TECNO Kenya, the campaign reflects the mindset of a generation that is taking ownership of its future.

“Kenyans are building careers, growing businesses, learning new skills and creating opportunities every day. They want technology that supports their ambitions and keeps pace with their lifestyles,” she said.

A Generation Redefining Success

Today’s consumers are increasingly choosing unconventional career paths, balancing full-time jobs with businesses, freelancing, digital content creation and continuous learning.

Their smartphones have become essential tools for productivity, communication and creativity, making performance and reliability more important than ever.

TECNO says the “Own Your Move” platform is designed to resonate with professionals, entrepreneurs, creators and side-hustlers who value purpose over popularity. The campaign encourages people to stay true to their own journeys instead of following trends or external expectations.

Built for Kenya’s Fast-Paced Digital Lifestyle

The launch comes as Kenya’s digital ecosystem continues to evolve rapidly. Recent statistics from the Communications Authority of Kenya show that more consumers are upgrading from older mobile networks to 4G and 5G, driven by demand for faster internet and improved mobile experiences.

For many users, smartphones have become the centre of everyday life. Whether attending virtual meetings, managing businesses, editing content, making digital payments or staying connected with family and friends, consumers expect a device that can keep up with their daily routines.

Designed with these needs in mind, the TECNO POVA Curve 2 5G features an 8,000mAh Mega Battery that delivers all-day power while maintaining a slim 7.42mm profile. Powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7100 5G processor, the smartphone is built to handle multitasking, gaming and content creation with ease.

It also comes with 12GB RAM, 256GB of internal storage, three years of complimentary 256GB TECNO Cloud Storage, 5G connectivity, eSIM support and dual enhanced signal chipsets to ensure stable connectivity wherever users go.

Encouraging Kenyans to Share Their Stories

Beyond introducing a new smartphone, TECNO is inviting Kenyans to participate in the “They Say… I Disagree”campaign by sharing personal stories, photographs and videos that reflect their perspectives on ambition, leadership, success and personal identity.

The initiative will culminate in a celebration recognising local “move-makers” individuals who are building businesses, creating opportunities and inspiring others by pursuing success on their own terms.

With the launch of the POVA Curve 2 5G and the “Own Your Move” platform, TECNO is reinforcing the idea that technology should empower people to achieve more, rather than simply keep up with trends.
As work, creativity and entrepreneurship continue to evolve, the brand hopes its latest campaign will encourage more Kenyans to confidently define their own path.

The TECNO POVA Curve 2 5G is now available through official TECNO retail outlets, authorised dealers, operator partners and online platforms across Kenya at a recommended retail price of KES 59,999.

DCI Arraigns Five Over Alleged SHA Fraud Scheme Worth Millions

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arraigned five directors linked to two healthcare facilities over an alleged fraud scheme targeting the Social Health Authority (SHA).

The suspects appeared before the Milimani Law Courts following investigations into fraudulent medical claims that are estimated to have cost the public health insurer tens of millions of shillings.

The case follows a formal complaint by SHA after a forensic audit uncovered widespread irregularities in claims submitted by several contracted healthcare providers.

The audit also revealed that some health facilities previously shut down by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) for non-compliance had continued operating under active SHA contracts.

Investigations Uncover Alleged Fraudulent Claims
According to the DCI, investigations established that the suspects allegedly orchestrated fraudulent schemes involving fictitious medical claims, including billing for patients who were never admitted, falsified medical records, and false statements used to obtain payments from SHA.

Detectives further found that some claims were allegedly submitted by healthcare facilities operating outside the requirements of the Social Health Insurance Act and other applicable regulatory frameworks.

Investigators estimate that Nissi Medical Centre allegedly received more than Sh38.7 million through fraudulent claims. Dawa Front Healthcare Services is suspected to have fraudulently obtained more than Sh2.5 million, while detectives intercepted additional claims worth over Sh8.1 million before they were processed for payment.

Five Directors Face Multiple Charges

Before the Milimani Law Courts, the five accused persons faced several charges related to the alleged scheme.

The accused include Nissi Medical Centre directors Dominic Atieno and Peter Atieno, alongside Dawa Front Healthcare Services directors Eugine Ochieng, Enos Osire, and Elija Otieno.

The charges include conspiracy to commit a felony, making false statements to obtain benefits under the Social Health Insurance Act, and acquisition and use of proceeds of crime contrary to the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act (POCAMLA).

The DCI says investigations remain active, with detectives pursuing additional suspects believed to have played a role in the alleged fraud scheme.

The directorate reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public resources and protecting the integrity of Kenya’s healthcare financing system. It said individuals found to have exploited public health funds through fraudulent practices will be held accountable in accordance with the law as investigations continue.

What Makes Sarova Woodlands in Nakuru Tick?

What Makes Sarova Woodlands in Nakuru Tick?

Nakuru has changed a lot in the last decade. New hotels keep opening along the highway and around the town centre, chasing the traffic that comes with the county’s growing status as a business and conference hub.

Even with the new kids on the block, when you ask anyone who travels this route regularly which property they’d pick without hesitation, and Sarova Woodlands still comes up first. That’s worth examining, because it isn’t an accident of location or brand recognition alone. It comes down to a handful of decisions the hotel has stuck with even as the competition around it has multiplied.

The Address Does Half the Work

Sarova Woodlands sits just off the main Nairobi-Nakuru highway, on a wooded avenue in the upscale Milimani residential area close to State House, and is only about 2.5 kilometers from Nakuru’s central business district. That combination is rarer than it sounds. Most hotels in Nakuru have to choose between being close to town, and therefore noisy and cramped, or being peaceful, and therefore inconvenient.

Woodlands manages both, tucked into a quiet residential pocket while still being a short drive from anything a guest might need downtown. It also happens to be an easy run from the Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site and Menengai Crater, and not far from the main gate of Lake Nakuru National Park, which means the hotel works equally well as a base for a business trip or a launch pad for a safari.

What Makes Sarova Woodlands in Nakuru Tick?
What Makes Sarova Woodlands in Nakuru Tick?

Scale Without Losing the Personal Touch

The hotel runs 147 rooms and suites, ranging from superior rooms and studios up to executive suites and a presidential suite, which is a serious footprint for a town the size of Nakuru.

What’s notable is that the hotel hasn’t let that scale turn it impersonal. Guest reviews consistently circle back to the same theme: staff who remember names, front-desk teams who go out of their way, and a general sense that the welcome is not scripted.

One recent review described every interaction with staff, whether at reception, in housekeeping, or through the concierge, as prompt, personalized and genuinely warm, and even mentioned the general manager sending guests off with farewell gifts at checkout.

That kind of detail doesn’t happen because of a training manual. It happens because a hotel has built a culture around it and defends that culture as the property has grown.

What Makes Sarova Woodlands in Nakuru Tick?
What Makes Sarova Woodlands in Nakuru Tick?

The Small Things That Add Up

Walk through the room list and it reads like a checklist of what actually matters to a traveler rather than what looks good in a brochure. Air-conditioning, black-out curtains, a proper mini-bar, a safe-deposit box, and wireless internet across the property are standard, not upsells.

Rooms come with premium bedding, a pillow menu, and 43-inch televisions with satellite channels, while bathrooms include bathrobes, slippers and proper toiletries. None of that is flashy on its own. Together, it signals a hotel that thinks about comfort at the level of someone who actually stays in hotels, not just someone designing a lobby for photographs.

Food and Leisure That Don’t Feel Like Afterthoughts

The Cinnamon Restaurant serves both buffet and à la carte meals, with live cooking stations that keep dining from feeling routine, and The Courtyard offers a more relaxed outdoor spot for drinks, snacks, and casual meetings.

Beyond the restaurant, the property has the Tulia Spa, a health club, a gift shop stocked with Kenyan artefacts sourced directly from local artisans, and a swimming pool that guests describe as a genuinely relaxing spot rather than a box-ticking amenity.

It’s the kind of range that lets a guest structure a whole stay, work in the morning, swim in the afternoon, unwind at the spa, without ever leaving the grounds.

Consistency Is the Real Differentiator

None of these features are unique in isolation. Other hotels in Nakuru have pools, restaurants, and comfortable rooms too. What sets Sarova Woodlands apart is that it delivers all of it at once, consistently, trip after trip. That consistency is the hardest thing for any hospitality brand to build and the easiest thing for a competitor to undercut on price and still lose on.

New hotels will keep opening in Nakuru, and some of them will be cheaper, some flashier. But Sarova Woodlands has earned its reputation the slow way, through repeat guests who know exactly what they’re getting every time they walk through the door. That, more than any single amenity, is what makes it tick.

Artcaffé Brings Mediterranean Flavours to Kenya With Its New Winter Menu

Cool weather calls for comforting meals, and Artcaffé has answered with a fresh seasonal menu inspired by the vibrant flavours of the Mediterranean, Middle East and North Africa.

The new Winter Mediterranean Menu combines smoky grills, fragrant spices, fresh herbs and citrus notes to create dishes that are both hearty and refreshing. Whether you’re grabbing breakfast, meeting friends for lunch or enjoying a cosy dinner, the menu promises something exciting for every occasion.

“Seasonal menus are one of our favourite Artcaffé traditions because they allow us to explore a cuisine with real energy and give our guests something genuinely new,” said Jyoti Patel, Head of Culinary at Artcaffé.

She added that the menu balances the comfort people crave during winter with bright, fresh ingredients that keep every dish vibrant.

New dishes worth trying

One of the biggest highlights is the Bone-Broth Dawa. Made from 24-hour slow-cooked bone broth with ginger and a touch of salt, it offers a warm and nourishing alternative to traditional hot drinks. Sourced from Artcaffé’s own butchery, it’s designed for chilly mornings or cool evenings.

Another standout is the Casablanca Chicken Tagine. The Moroccan-inspired dish pairs slow-cooked chicken with Persian jewelled rice, roasted almonds and a fresh salad for a colourful and satisfying meal.

Grill lovers also have plenty to explore. The Beef Kebab Tabbouleh combines grilled beef kebabs with focaccia, tabbouleh rice, fries and creamy tzatziki. Meanwhile, the Mediterranean Snapper features grilled fish served with tomatoes, olives, olive oil and fresh herbs.

If you’re after something lighter, the Chicken Tikka Skewers arrive with peppers, onions and a zesty lemon-coriander dressing.

The new menu also introduces handheld favourites inspired by Middle Eastern street food.

The Spicy Chicken Shawarma Wrap blends hummus, pickled carrots, radish, coriander and chilli for a satisfying bite. Meanwhile, the Beef Doner Kebab Wrap combines charred peppers with lemon tahini for a rich, smoky flavour.

Vegetarian diners are equally spoilt for choice. The Adas Falafel Harvest Bowl layers falafel, beetroot, butternut, hummus, tabbouleh rice and crunchy za’atar chips into one colourful meal.

There’s also the Arabic Bulgur Salad, which combines bulgur wheat, cucumber, tomatoes, parsley, mint, feta, raisins and spicy nuts in a bright lemon and olive oil dressing.

The Mediterranean influence extends throughout the day. Guests can start with Turkish Eggs in the morning, enjoy Moroccan Harira Soup for lunch or share Medina Beef Arayes and hummus platters over dinner.

The drinks menu follows the same theme. New additions include the Mediterranean G&T, the refreshing Minted Firebird mocktail and a curated wine collection sourced and labelled in the South of France by Artcaffé’s team of sommeliers.

Alongside the seasonal menu, Artcaffé has launched Moments, its new loyalty programme.

Customers can sign up by scanning a QR code in-store or through the website. Members will enjoy exclusive rewards across Artcaffé restaurants, Gourmet Markets, Gastro Bars and event services.

The programme rewards everyday visits, whether for a morning coffee, business lunch, family dinner or weekend celebration.

Growing across Kenya

The menu arrives as Artcaffé continues its national expansion.

After opening locations in Kisumu and Voi, the brand has added new outlets in Kianda, South C and Ngong Town. More branches are planned for Thika Town, Tatu City, Loresho, Nakuru and Eldoret.

The expansion is expected to create more than 700 jobs across Kenya in 2026 while bringing the Artcaffé experience to even more communities.

“Artcaffé has grown because people have made us part of their everyday lives,” said Grace Njeru, Head of Markets.

She noted that the new menu, the Moments loyalty programme and the expanding network of restaurants all reflect the brand’s commitment to creating memorable dining experiences while supporting job creation across the country.

With bold flavours, seasonal comfort and plenty of new dishes to discover, Artcaffé’s Winter Mediterranean Menu offers a delicious excuse to gather around the table this season.

Why We Need More Authentic African Stories on Our Screens

Why We Need More Authentic African Stories on Our Screens

There was something magical about this year’s FIFA World Cup.

Yes, the goals were spectacular, and the drama kept fans on the edge of their seats. However, what people will remember most are the stories behind the tournament.

One of the biggest surprises came from Cape Verde. With a population of just over half a million people, the nation made its World Cup debut and quickly became one of the tournament’s most inspiring stories. Going unbeaten in the group stage and pushing defending champions Argentina to extra time, Cape Verde captured hearts around the world.

It proved something we’ve always known: people don’t just fall in love with champions they fall in love with authentic stories.

The same shift is happening in African film and television.

Audiences want stories that feel real

Today’s viewers are looking for more than beautiful scenery or familiar faces. They want stories that reflect real lives, cultures and experiences.

Across Africa, filmmakers are embracing local languages, traditions, humour and everyday realities. Instead of trying to imitate international productions, they’re telling stories that feel genuine and audiences are responding.

The result is a new wave of African productions that resonate both at home and abroad.

Why We Need More Authentic African Stories on Our Screens
Why We Need More Authentic African Stories on Our Screens
Local stories, global appeal

Kenya has already shown what’s possible.

Productions such as Pepeta used football to explore ambition, crime and community through a distinctly Kenyan lens. Meanwhile, The Polygamist tackled family dynamics and relationships in ways that felt authentic to African audiences.

Neither production tried to copy Hollywood.

Instead, they embraced local storytelling and that’s exactly what made them stand out.

It’s a reminder that authenticity doesn’t limit a story’s reach. It expands it.

A growing creative economy

The demand for authentic African content is also creating new opportunities.

Streaming platforms and broadcasters continue to invest in local productions because audiences want stories that introduce them to different cultures while exploring universal emotions.

As a result, Africa’s creative economy is growing rapidly. Writers, actors, directors, producers and cinematographers are finding more opportunities to share their work with global audiences.

At the same time, these productions promote tourism, preserve culture and strengthen Africa’s creative industries.

Investing in the next generation

Authentic storytelling begins with talented storytellers.

That’s why initiatives like the MultiChoice Talent Factory Academy matter. By training young filmmakers, writers and producers, the academy is helping a new generation develop the skills and confidence to tell African stories from an African perspective.

The impact is already visible.

Across the continent, productions are becoming more ambitious while staying rooted in local communities, indigenous languages and shared cultural experiences.

The world is watching

The FIFA World Cup reminded us that powerful stories can come from anywhere.

Cape Verde didn’t become unforgettable because it won the tournament. It became unforgettable because its journey inspired millions.

African storytelling has the same power.

The more filmmakers embrace authentic voices and local experiences, the more audiences around the world will connect with them. In a world overflowing with content, originality is what leaves a lasting impression.

And perhaps that’s the greatest lesson of all: the stories that stay with us are the ones that feel true.

By Victoria Goro

Director of the MultiChoice Talent Factory Academy in Eastern Africa.
