Over the past 25 years, Safaricom has enabled the advancement of technology into Kenya, starting out as a mobile telephony department at Kenya Posts and Telecommunications Corporation before incorporation as a standalone company.
Starting out in the early 2000s, the company offered voice services, enabling easier and affordable communication.
James Maitai, Group Chief Technology and Information Officer (CTIO) at Safaricom PLC joined the company in 2006 when the company was upgrading its network.
“I happened to have been leading that evolution from 2G to 3G then, this was the year 2006 -2007 as the customer evolved. So the customer started requiring data, people who wanted to work remotely or do basic things on the internet,” he recalls.

As technology continued to evolve, Maitai was also part of the team that participated in the coming of the fibre optic cable (TEAMs), increasing capacity on connectivity, data and enterprise solutions.
From offering basic connectivity to 5G today, Safaricom now aims to be the digital partner of choice for individuals, enterprises and the public sector, and there have been significant advancements in offering the solutions needed for this.
At the same time, Safaricom has crossed over to Ethiopia, where it is working to advance telecommunication, data and mobile money.
Maitai was part of the team that worked to build the network for at Safaricom Ethiopia from scratch, among other crucial roles.

For most people, gaming starts as a hobby an escape from the day-to-day hustle of life. For those who had access to the handheld and computer-based games, they have grown up with games always at hand.
Over the years, gaming has grown from a niche pastime to a booming global industry, and Kenya is quickly catching up.
Evans Kiragu and James Ahere started gaming at a young age, but their interests went beyond playing to knowing how the games were created and shared with avid gamers.
“From way back, I used to play games on what we called a brick game. So after that, I got into playing PS 1, PS 2 and I think what drew me into video games was not just the fun of it, but my technical mind was trying to figure out, how can I also create a game?” said Evans.
Over time, Evans came to learn that when you create a game, it’s more of a world that you’re immersing players in.
What You Need to Get into the Gaming Business
In James case, he was intrigued by the storytelling element of gaming while his twin brother was more interested in gaming.
“If you look at the most famous games, like God of War, Greek mythology, I always wanted to showcase, you know, African expression through a game, its interactivity,” said James.
Evans went on to found Mekan Games while James is the co-founder of Weza Interactive Entertainment.
“To venture into game development, you need programming skills, and then game design. The visual part of the game through either 2D or 3D animation is also key,” said James.
With the evolution of technology, gaming development and gaming has also evolved into something bigger.
“As technology has gotten better, we’ve seen the 3D environments, worlds that players can interact with. Currently, we are talking about user generated content. Some of the biggest games out there are fun not because the developers made the game to be fun, but because the content created by the players themselves is something that’s enjoyed all over the world,” said Evans.
The key driver in this evolution is access to the internet and access to 5G to allow you to connect with the rest of the world.

Today is International Podcast Day, a reminder of how far podcasting has come, how deeply it resonates with creators and listeners and how it is shaping the future of entertainment.
For digital trailblazer Richard “Astar” Njau, podcasting served as a platform where he, a former gospel rap artist, could share conversations with fellow musicians thanks to his access to many musical gurus.
When he started out with Cleaning the Airwaves (CTA) in 2015, his target audience was his colleagues in the gospel music scene.
However, when his music career paused, his curiosity expanded beyond musical experiences to understanding personalities and businesses across various industries and sectors, and he took his listeners along for the journey.
“After I stopped being a musician, I began struggling with aspects of business leadership, so I pivoted. Julian Kyula was my first pivot to understanding business, not for you guys. I was not podcasting for you guys. I do it for me first,”
he says.
For former radio queen Kalekye Mumo, podcasting was a chance at freedom to tell her own story without being confined to the character the media had crafted of her. It offered her the opportunity to share other people’s unfiltered stories without the constraints of traditional media, own her voice, reveal parts of her life that she wants to, and learn more about herself.
“The character at Kiss had been defined as single, and I played it really well, because everybody thought I was, and men thought I hated men, and you know, I’d played it well. But God, then tells me, ‘Now you must share your story, because I want you to do this podcast about getting people to speak about their side of the story on relationships, but also take accountability for their role in whatever experience they have had’,” Kalekye says.
What Makes a Podcast Tick
Podcasts are currently experiencing a breakthrough moment, as content creators, public figures, celebrities, and social media influencers establish their presence on this audio platform.
While the bar to entry for podcasts is low, requiring only the right equipment and finding a quiet space to record, it has become a significant business in the entertainment industry, with sponsors eager to capitalise on this medium to gain attention and reach their desired audience.
Joyriders, the loyal and appreciative fans of the Joy Ride Podcast, have helped Ben and Wanjiru, the hosts of the podcast, to build an authentic community centred on shared experiences in relationships, faith, and life’s journey.
Ben and Wanjiru launched their podcast in 2022. After eight seasons, the podcast has spawned two additional spin-off shows that they also host, called The Den and The Nook, as well as a game named The Joyride Game.
As podcasts continue to evolve, they are moving from the mic to the stage, with listeners finding their favourite shows on YouTube, sharing moments on TikTok and attending live events for a more interactive experience among the hosts and listeners.
Ben and Wanjiru have taken their podcast on the road, conducting campus tours as part of their live experiences.
“Podcasts have opened up a new way to connect with your audience, and beyond just the camera, you find most podcasters have now taken up events to connect with your audience one-on-one and put faces to the people who watch you. And that also now adds gear to that community building,” Wanjiru says.
According to Spotify’s 2024 Wrapped for Creators, there were more than six million podcasts on the platform, where more than half a billion people listened to a podcast as part of their daily routines since 2019.
Like Richard, Barrack Bukusi started his podcast, Financially Incorrect, partly to satisfy his own curiosity.
“I wanted to have more honest and possibly revealing conversations about money in our society, in Kenya and specifically East Africa,” Barrack says.
The more than three million views on his YouTube channel are proof that he is getting genuine engagement from real users and that his audience wants to learn more about money from the guests he hosts on his show. But what he wants most at the end of the day is a successful podcast.
“A successful podcast is one that is sustainable, meaning it can pay for itself. It can produce itself, pay its host, figure out a way to make money and basically justify its existence,” he says.

“Having the Kenyan flag on us is always a sense of pride. It means everything having been born and brought up here. I think the early preparation with the PGK Equator Tour is incredible. Now as Kenyans, we have an opportunity to qualify for the Olympics and play against the best golfers in the world,” explained Mohit.

One year ago, I left San Francisco, sold and gave away everything I owned, and moved into a 40-liter backpack. I traveled to 45 cities in 20 countries, 3 Disneylands, and 1 bunny island. I also worked 50 hours a week building and launching a startup.I determined to study a few remarkable put up titles, and a few that wanted work. Alliteration is remarkable, clever, and it`s brief and sweet. However, I wasn’t positive precisely what I could be clicking on.
Traveling is not the same as vacation
There’s a growing community of “digital nomads” who live a location independent lifestyle. We’re software developers, designers, writers, journalists, engineers, and all sorts of people who share a passion for the work we do and experiencing the world.
I propose that a nomadic lifestyle is a productive way to build a real company. I’m working hard on bootstrapping an ambitious startup, Moo.do. I’m traveling because it’s cheaper, more productive, and more inspiring than sitting in one place. Traveling is the most responsible choice for the sake of my company, my finances, and my personal growth.
I became a nomad by accident
Three years ago I was preparing to leave my job at Microsoft to move to San Francisco to start a startup. My friend asked me “but why do you need to be in San Francisco when you can work on a computer from anywhere?” His question made a lot of sense. As I thought about it more, I began to question my assumptions about a “normal life” which don’t make sense in our modern world.
I reject the idea of a 9–5 job. I want to explore the world while the sun is out instead of wasting the daylight hours working inside and dreaming of my next vacation.
I went to Tokyo Disney, Euro Disney, and Hong Kong Disney this year
But it didn’t work out so well.
After traveling for 6 months, I gave up and still moved to San Francisco. Traveling was fun, but I had a great idea and I needed to really focus and get real work done. What better place to build my startup than Silicon Valley?
But I soon found myself becoming too comfortable and slowing down, getting easily bored and distracted, and watching a lot of TV. I sat at my computer for 12 hours a day but didn’t feel like I was productive.

The donation aims to expose pupils to the array of digital skills available to enhance their knowledge and opportunities
Listed agribusiness firm Kakuzi Plc (NSE: KUKZ) has stepped up its corporate digital literacy enhancement programme for schools in Murang’a County.
As part of an initiative to equip Primary school students with digital skills and enable them compete on an equal footing nationally and beyond, Kakuzi has donated 18 computers and 3 printers to three rural based public primary schools within the county.
The donation, aims to improve access to digital information and streamline administrative processes for the schools.
The beneficiary schools, Kinyangi Primary, Kitito Primary, and Kakuzi Primary, each received six computers and a printer. The schools requested these resources to address their challenges in accessing information and printing documents.
“Digital skills and general access to computer systems in the school environment is now an imperative. The lack of computer systems hampers schools such as ours from achieving their full potential. We are glad that Kakuzi has responded positively to our request,” said Madam Immaculate Keige Kitito, Primary School Headteacher
“Besides basic training in computer operations, previously, we had to travel to Thika Town to access our systems and print essential documents. This led to frequent disruptions in our operations. In some instances, exams had to be postponed due to a shortage of printed past papers.”added Madam Immaculate
The Kakuzi donation was officially handed over in a ceremony attended by Kakuzi management and key community leaders, including the Area Chief, Assistant Chief, and TSC representative for Ithanga, Kakuzi Sub-County.
“Kakuzi PLC is committed to supporting education and empowering our local communities. We hope to alleviate these schools’ challenges and enhance the students’ learning experience by providing these computers and printers. Our goal is to introduce them to digital skills early in life so they’re exposed to global opportunities,” said Chris Flowers Kakuzi PLC Managing Director.
Earlier this year, Kakuzi also spearheaded the effort to renovate all three schools. The renovation started last year as part of Kakuzi’s commitment to realizing Sustainable Development Goal 4—Quality Education and seeing the school’s environment improve immensely, thus boosting the quality of education at the institutions.
